It’s the Sixth Time Getting Kicked Out

ludlow bar

Wake up, take a sip of Ace of Spaces like it’s water

After a twenty-plus year run on Ludlow Street between Hester and Canal, the photogenic bar that was most photogenically [switch] ollied over by Quimothy Cardona and most recently ollied over by Michael Carroll (also a one-time nearest spot to the G-Man’s circa 2009 flophouse residence, and the ender in the second QS clip ever), has been replaced by a much higher, un-ollieable bar (until Aldrin Garcia shows up or something…) Thanks to James from Labor for the tip.

Speaking of which — a few seconds of new Carroll footage in New York.

This edit was sick… Marshall with a new one featuring Kevin Bradley, Sage, T.J., Troy and the rest of the Hardies Hardware dudes. Skating starts at roughly the 2:30 mark.

This is an incredible undertaking. Over the course of multiple letters sent to him in jail, the Chrome Ball Incident managed to facilitate an in-depth, fully autobiographic interview with the currently incarcerated Lenny Kirk.

Best New Jersey trick of 2015? Via Paul Young’s thoroughly awesome Bleach video.

A heartwarming / potentially tear-inducing Christmas gift from the most astute golden era Girl/Chocolate nostalgists working today: Goldfish extras, remixed.

Village Psychic and Danny Falla did a wear test for one of the earliest non-Dunk Nike SB models. Shout out to everyone who stocked up on $20 pairs of these and E-Cues from Jersey Gardens circa 2003.

Monster Children interviewed the coolest skateboarder of all-time.

Odds & Ends… 1) Jason Byoun sneaks into the Brooklyn Banks. 2) Cell Jawn #19. 3) Raw footage of J John the Don in Philly via Bust Crew. 4) New York edit via Waylon Bone featuring a handful of the names you often see in New York edits. 5) Some new Rich Homie Juan footage in the second “Futur” edit by Yoan Taillandier. 7) Some “Sequence 1” outtakes in HD video blog #17 from Johnny Wilson.

Thanks to the crew at House of Vans for getting rid of the bowl that even people who are good at skating bowls didn’t like (i.e. Corey Rubin…the only person I know who’s good at bowls), and maximizing on all the space it freed up. If you have any New York-based friends who work for Vans, they’re gonna hate you by March ;)

“I even remember being quite shocked at the response during the premiere in Sheffield. I recall that there was a UK DC tour coming through and the same guys that owned the distribution that focused on DC – and all the USA board brands – looked heavily bummed at the impact the premiere made. It seems they might have been right, as the video was the heralding of legit UK companies.” Sidewalk with a detailed oral history on the video that more-or-less introduced an entire post-900/THPS generation of Americans to British skateboarding, Blueprint’s Waiting for the World.

Max Palmer made Skate Jawn-branded sewer caps that are kinda sorta skateable.

The Mira Conyo squad is premiering their new vid and releasing a new Heights-based skate zine uptown tonight. 4447 Broadway, off the 190th Street A train.

Boil the Ocean’s annual top ten video parts countdown is now underway.

Some progress shots of the skatepark being built in place of Fat Kid Spot.

How is this only happening now? Arizona Iced Tea officially has a skate team.

Quote of the Week: “Don’t walk up to me pretending like you’re going sober. I don’t care.” — T-Bird

Let’s end the last Monday Links post of the year off with 2015’s drunkest song.

P.S. In anticipation of #another #year, here’s one last chance to take 25% off the remaining goods in the webstore. Enter promo code “anotherone” when buying anything. Expires at midnight. Thanks for all the support throughout 2015.

The QS Year in Review Countdown: 15-11

basket outdoors

Took last week off for some administrative duties. Previously: Part one, part two.

15. Le Basket Discontinues Outdoor Seating

It has been observed that skateboarders are the original gentrifiers. The undesirable corners of society are familiar territories to us, especially if they have something we want. And what do we, Skateboarders: The Original Gentrifiers™, want more than a place to get drunk? A place to get drunk in public, naturally.

Of course we’ll sit in plain view on Broadway, looking completely unemployable with our boards stacked along the wall, and the aluminum remnants of six six-packs teetering off the table. It wasn’t long until others took notice of the cheap real estate, and started closing in. By 2010, we were sharing ~fifteen seats with ~fifty bike messengers. By 2012, NYU students with a thirst for Magic Hats priced us out. In 2015, the party was shut down, but we barely noticed.

Rob Gonyon might have the most fire iPhone videos out right now. Features a few clips from the yet-to-be-fully-completed East Williamsburg Bushwick Skatepark.

Can’t remember the last time a bunch of people in New York kept bringing up a foreign Vimeo upload as much as the Parisian “Daydream” clip from last week.

Mango and friends skating #weird stuff around New York for three minutes.

Boil the Ocean on all potential S.O.T.Y. candidates. I’ll buy everyone who reads this site a crook shove at the bar if it ends up not being A.V.E. In related news, a Max Palmer two-peat is not entirely impossible for Q.S.S.O.T.Y.

This dude does maybe the greatest backside 180 5-0 grind ever done as his ender. It looks like a full-on manual. Thanks to Mostly Skateboarding for pointing that one out.

Nice to see Zeigfeld still sorta existing post-apocalypse.

Chromeball has a great interview with Thomas Campbell about the early days of skate magazines, which also touches on the making of the first Supreme video / short film from 1996. “Some people had beef with those [Euro] articles because they felt those countries didn’t support skateboarding. Whatever. Who cares. We’re on the Earth. Go skate whatever you want.” You heard your boy Mars got water now?

Mike Carroll on #musicsupervision and…Lupus.

Speaking of Carroll, SMLTalk tried to get to the bottom of the varial flip’s re-accepted place in the trick selection landscape, i.e. how it went from getting boo-ed at contests to perfectly fine to throw mid-line in 2015.

KCDC built some new stuff under the B.Q.E. thanks to the DLX build project.

‘Core:’ A Nike SB & Quartersnacks Video by Johnny Wilson

push

All photography by Zach Malfa-Kowalski

Nike SB and Quartersnacks present “Core,” the new video by Johnny Wilson. The project depicts a week-long journey through Upstate New York, with stops in Albany, Syracuse, Ithaca, Rochester and Buffalo.

This was unequivocally the first skate trip in the history of skateboarding where not a single person complained. No “these spots suck,” no “let’s go somewhere else,” no “pull over to this Taco Bell.” Not even a request to stop at local D.I.Y. spots, as it was deemed that skating D.I.Y. without having contributed their construction is not as #core as a #bond with the #streets. Nobody even knew what a “skatepark” was. #core ;)

Features Bobby Worrest, Hjalte Halberg, Nick Boserio, Antonio Durao, Cyrus Bennett, Q.S.S.O.T.Y. Max Palmer and Andrew Wilson. Filmed and edited by Johnny Wilson. All trip photography by Zach Malfa-Kowalski.

Upstate Update: Ithaca, Rochester & Buffalo

cyrusollie

The western half of New York state has a handful of cities that are just over an hour drive from one another. This includes Buffalo and Rochester, the second and third largest in the state.

The first stop was Ithaca, home of the westernmost Ivy League school and birthplace of the Tornado Spin — the subject of skateboarding’s first viral video. You really gain an understanding for how seldom-seen these cities are when a three-year-old / minute-and-a-half-long Jake Johnson Brick Harbor part is repeatedly brought up as the only reference point for the locals showing you spots.

After an Orvis catalog shoot and some cliff jumping, the spent the first night at the cement wave with white bulbs that Jake skates in said part. We managed to avoid Cornell cops that night, but didn’t get so lucky the next day, when we went back to skate a building funded by college drop-out, Bill Gates. Happy to say I’m writing this on a Macbook, because our short stint at Bill and Melinda Gates Hall resulted in a one-year ban from Cornell University property.

“You’re going to Rochester? There are flatbars everywhere.”

At least six thousand people told me there are flatbars all over Rochester. They weren’t lying. There are flatbars all over Rochester. Can’t figure out why the city planners have such an affinity for round, one-to-two-foot-high flat rails, but they’re literally everywhere you look in the city. Google tries to get you drunk if you ask about it. No wonder everyone upstate is hammered all the time ;)
