First Post of 2016

Happy New Year to everyone. Late start to 2016. Still coming to terms with this “oh right, this is what winter is supposed to feel like”-feeling. Keep it positive this year and have a good one. Stay warm :)

First Posts Time Capsule: 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015.

Let’s start off 2016 by still talking a bit about 2015… Some year-end lists that point you in the direction of parts and videos that you might not have caught. 1) Better Skate Than Never listed the top thirty videos / promos of 2015, with a primary focus on independent ventures e.g. Bleach is #1. 2) Café Creme blog with a gourmet selection of 2015’s ten best. 3) Boil the Ocean already had a detailed post-by-post top ten countdown, and offered some bonus suggestions.

Always fun to see what’s going on uptown. A new one from the Mira Conyo squad.

IG comp featuring the quick-footed 2015 Q.S.I.G.S.O.T.Y. contender, Dane Brady.

2016 resolution? Stfu and stop complaining about spots. Probably gonna last a week.

A crash course in skateboarders v.s. natural disasters.

Ever wonder what happened to early-aughts child star, Knox Godoy? Jenkem tracked him down. Seems like those Baker guys like drinking a beer or two, huh?

The dude who kickflip back tail gapped the ledge to three-stair gap at Pulaski Park just back tail kickflipped the ledge to three-stair gap at Pulaski Park.

Another year, another video blog from Johnny Wilson, and another iPhone clip from Genesis, both featuring the Most Productive Crew™ in New York skateboarding.

Four minutes of Sabotage 4 extras, and twenty-four minutes of Duzzed extras. That urban mega ramp section at the beginning is insane. Where is “2015’s reigning lord of hairball” when you really need him?

Kids worship is basically the skateboard/downtown-equivalent of rappers’ Scarface worship at this point, but still got a kick out of these unseen behind-the-scenes polaroids from it + interview via the film’s costume designer. Aanndd Washington Square is a full central spot again. Shit goes in circles bro.

Village Psychic theorizes that scenes with harsh winters produce the best videos.

Of course Pho Bang is first on this list. Of course #skaterfaves

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Jimmy Butler beat some guy named Michael Jordan’s franchise record for most points scored in a half yesterday.

Quote of the Week
Sweet Waste: “Where did my youth go man…”
Observant Gentleman: “Enid’s.”
Sweet Waste: “Shit, you’re right.”

We’ll miss you, Dr. Zizmor.

“I can’t talk to these people about Thug Motivation when we have fake money in the boxes.” Thanks for everything man #july26ththeboydeliveredaclassic

Damn, the dude on the New Yorker cover can barely even ollie.

Free Skate Mag has another Lucas Puig Instagram remix, edited to that Young Thug song that everyone really tried to make happen #in #da #club at the start of the summer but already forgot about. Works great for the vid though.

The “Summer Trip to New York” edits are finally starting to roll in! As is the DS2 music supervision! Thought it was a drought! D.C’s Palace 5ive rolled up to New York for a bit and came back with a five-minute VX montage.

Someone made a new Cyrus Bennett remix with a bunch of his HD video blog footage.

Kareem Campbell still got it.

Quick two-minute montage with a bunch of Bronze affiliates and a three-minute montage with a bunch of dudes from the Bronx.

Whatever, DJ Khaled is still one of my favorite skaters.

Amazing that a lot of these European D.I.Y. spots started with a single quarterpipe. Or that, like, they’ve been allowed to exist for as long as they have.

Fakie Hill Bomb has a cool interview with Iain Borden, one of the most vocal pro-skateboarding architecture academics, about the future of integrating skating into modern public spaces (e.g. hopefully this.)

Diamond Days #82.

Making It Happen is a new all-New York vid coming out later this year. Teaser here.

The Times put together a “where are they now?” feature for that movie that skaters really like on the occasion of its 20-year-anniversary.

Spot Checks: There’s a new wallie thing behind T.F. and a BMW at Lenox.

Quote of the Week: “I watched Wild, it was like a fakeass Into the Wild.” — E.J.

In case you haven’t already heard / seen: the NYPD installed a police tower in the middle of Tompkins. Be careful doing whippits behind the basketball court after you lose on a nollie flip in S.K.A.T.E.

Shout Out Capone-N-Noreaga

“Yoooooooo, I heard she lives off the Kosciusko J.” “Yeah, I think I saw her at Five Leaves once.” ♥

Alien Workshop’s forgotten legacy: Ass shot 360 flips.

Y’all lucky Marcus McBride isn’t ten years younger!

The clearly Bronze-inspired Bev video is a fun watch. Troy’s part is sick, and Kasper’s ender at the 23rd Street hospital is something that footage can’t really do justice to.

Video blog #210 from the Beef Patty crew and NY Times #8 from the LurkNYC crew.

If you’ve seen one skateboarder’s “Day in the Life” clip, you’ve seen them all — EXCEPT only one has footage of Daniel Lebron skating flat in it.

Muckmouth tracked down Peter Bici, Ryan Hickey and even Henry Sanchez (who was the only glaring omission from the FTC book…he’s not very talkative here though) for their endless “Where are they now?” series.

New all-Southbank “Sission” clip from the PWBC. Not as good #musicsupervision as the last installment, but there are some rad Chewy Canon lines there.

Kennedy Cantrell’s part in the Dallas-based Burnt Out video solid. He goes over a moat mid-line. Full vid here. His part is at the 28-minute mark; haven’t had a chance to watch the full video yet. “They hatin’ on us ‘cuz we out here!”

Dylan Goldberger / James has a new part out for Coda Skateboards. Is that part he had in the Prizefighter video two years ago still online? Can’t find it anywhere.

The Tumblrverse scanned Big Brother’s 1999 article about fashion and skateboarding, which explains the origin of the Bob shirt, among other things. To all you other skateboard media institutions: Dibs on a 2014 remake.

The Spectacle Theater (S 3rd Street in Williamsburg) will be playing Memory Screen on June 10th at 8 P.M. Chris Carter and Duane Pitre will be in attendance, and will hold a Q & A after the video.

This is what came of the Murray Hill spot mentioned in a post from a few weeks ago.

They’re making a documentary about Kids. On one hand, you’d like to wish that everyone would stop mining one of the most easily mineable relics of nineties nostalgia and focus elsewhere (Huf Epicly Later’d!), but on the other hand, last year’s Narratively article about the making of the film was better than the movie itself. A 90-minute version of that would probably be awesome.

New York is still sketchy if you look hard enough.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Kawhi Leonard is the Sports Desk’s new favorite non-German player over 6’3. Spurs in six?

Quote of the Week
Tufty: “We need to get beers.”
Waste: “There are 18 back at the house.”
Tufty: “That’s not enough.”
R.I.P. to the S 2nd and Havemeyer Social Club.

The new Twitter sucks. Who’s going to Future tomorrow?

Did anyone actually root for the Brooklyn Nets this season? Did Hov only do that so hopefully you won’t have to go through that?

This article about the making of Kids and what happened to the cast since 1995 by Caroline Rothstein is better than the movie itself. It mainly focuses on Harold Hunter and Justin Pierce, but manages to catch up with just about everyone with any sort of role in the film. An absolute must-read for any nineties east coast skate nerd.

Mic-E Reyes talks about punching people and getting punched during his Deluxe team manager days in a new interview with Chris Nieratko.

NY Skateboarding checks out the new street-based skatepark in Woodhaven, Queens. It’s so street that they even knobbed the lip of the brick bank!

Skate & Stuff” is a new 23-minute, New York-based video by William Shum with cool spots, lines in trench coats, and Sergio Leone movie cut-ins.

This dude Conor Holliday 5050s up the entire handicap ramp ledge at the Jersey City Post Office, among other things in a new part, and Josh Wilson skates NJ crust in a Justin White-ish edit.

As expected, Boil the Ocean weighs in on the sponsor resignation of the century, in addition to living a post-Pretty Sweet existence, Greco’s new part, and of course, Mark Suciu. “Is Mark Suciu actually a 40-year-old bro who had been quietly filming in various towns under assumed names over the past 15 years, and is the steady release of footage a sign that he may have died sometime early last year, leaving the executors of his estate to periodically drizzle out tapes to sponsors in a Tupac-like series of posthumous releases?”

To remind us of simpler times, we upgraded the quality on the 2009 Mind Field re-edit.

The new Russ Milligan part is super chill.

While on the topic of Canadians, we uploaded a standalone version of 2 Beerz and Bradley Sheppard’s part from Elephant Direct, which is also available online in full.

Spot Updates: The Penn Plaza manual pad is done for. Ten years later, and Reese Forbes still has the best trick on it.

QS Sports of the Week:Delfino dunking on Durant is like going to another county and seeing that they have pictures of dogs on the money.” — @netw3rk

Sorry ladies.

A pizza place in Brooklyn denied Mayor Bloomberg a second slice of pizza as a protest to the soda ban. (Fake) news story of the year.
