A Couple BFFs in Medellín, Colombia

“Colombia, huh.” Then come the sly smiles. There’s obvs no shortage of shithead Americans going to Colombia to be shitheads, but in all honesty, we weren’t going for shithead-related endeavors. We were trying to get out of the cold. It was three degrees outside the day we left.

Remember that 2012 S.O.T.Y. award? The one after Pretty Sweet? People thought Guy Mariano should’ve had it as the final victory to a tremendous redemption narrative, and for like, laser heelflipping out of a smith grind — for whatever reason he deemed that necessary to perform. A young Colombian man who was Possessed to Skate™ ended up getting it. He was the first Latin American to get it (right?), and the first non-American winner since Arto in 2001.

Why are we talking about S.O.T.Y? Well, when we went to Colombia for the first time in 2016, we went to Gonzalez’ neighborhood park. That guy is a god out there. He passed his possessed-ness off to thousands of Colombian kids, because this time around, it was obvious that skateboarding and its culture had become even bigger in Medellín. That one somewhat random S.O.T.Y. win had a massive impact in spreading skateboarding globally, even if we didn’t feel it in the States.

The plaza gods also blessed Medellín with an incredible plaza a little over a year ago. Parque Chimineas could best be described as if J-Kwon and Sants (had it not been bashed to shit over the years) had a baby, and already fueled its share of progression. That place alone is worth airfare + a five hour flight, and a bit more ~exotic~ than your run-of-the-mill New York winter escape destinations.

Watermelon Alex has been living down there for months, and Dre is seemingly an honorary Colombian. A second visit was much overdue. Can’t think of any other place I’ve traveled to where $200 lasts over a week. Also, that near-equator sun will have you in bed by 11 P.M., asleep deeper than you could’ve ever imagined. Thanks Alejo, Mateo and Alvarez for showing us around ♥

Fall Thru Like It’s August

It’s simple.

“When I spoke with one of my friends about writing this piece, she cautioned against it, stating that women in skateboarding have come so far in the past few years and I should wait to see what happens in the next few. But this isn’t an article about female skateboarders. This is a piece about my experience as a woman in skate culture.”

Cyrus made an eight-minute iPhone video with tons of 917 crew extras + clips from his travels.

The Canal Wheels full-length video, Mode, premieres at 198 Allen Street (between Houston & Stanton) at 8 P.M. on Thursday. Quick teaser here. Flyer here.

Gang Corp uploaded a bunch of B-sides and outtakes from their last California-based video, “Grabba.”

Kickflip god Brandon Westgate is the latest guest on The Bunt.

Village Psychic offers up some thoughts on the Polar video, which rather than being viewed collectively as a culture via a bunch of humans gathered in a room, was experienced on…PornHub. (Ed. Note: The video has been left off #QSTOP10 consideration until it is offered up on a more “official” viewing channel, because if we start counting things uploaded there, we probably have to start considering all of achievements uploaded to the ol’ Hub in a given week.)

“It’s dancing. And dancing’s fucking subjective. That’s why it’s a really weird thing when you can make a living doing it. And I was lucky that some people liked the way I danced. And I don’t ever take that for granted.” Rob Welsh reflects on his first-ever TWS Check Out.

Vice has a piece on the history of the frontside flip — both the Reynolds kind, and the Muska variation.

“As nostalgia deepens to the point that people tune in to watch retired and beloved pros flipping through old CCS catalogues, each new print ‘Thrasher’ and ‘TWS’ issue begins to look like a collector’s item, every board on the shop wall a potential hanger, every pro with a couple video parts under his belt a legend.” Boil the Ocean ponders on just when does the nostalgia go too far.

Ricardo Napoli’s Making It Happen video from last year is now online in full.

Juultage” is a montage filmed around New York that’s presumably Juul’s first not-so-covert foray into piercing through a skater market otherwise dominated by Cheap Cigs™ purchased in Chinatown with a state of Virginia stamp.

On the occasion of us getting into a tangent about European skaters aging more gracefully over on the small #skatetwitter community, here is a new Jesus Fernandez part composed out of footage that was leftover from The Flare.

Quote of the Week
Sweet Waste: “It’s crazy you’re 30 and never had a video part.”
Keith Denley: “I’m just gonna go down in history as one of those O.G. legends who never had that much footage.”

For whatever reason, this has been the go-to morning soundtrack in the QS office for the latter half of August.

Frog Skateboards, Stingwater, Heineken & Hjalte Halberg Present — Came to Paris For Nothing

After millions of dollars spent on airfare and accommodations, nearly a full day of traveling over sea and land, and much meticulous planning that it takes to get dozens of boys across the Atlantic, we were in Paris asking the immortal question that guides our lives: “Where are we gonna skate today?”

About 70% of the way through the trip, Nolan revealed that the only reason he swam to Paris (he’s not a big fan of planes) was for the purpose of skating the famous colored manual pad spot seen in a myriad of skate videos growing up. Much to his dismay, when those “where are we gonna skate today?”-convos were taking place and the spot would get mentioned, the proceeding thoughts were familiar…

“I think that’s still under scaffolding?”

“Are there other spots around there?”

“It’s not as good as it looks in videos.”

“We gotta take a train to get there…I kinda wanted to push around today.”

See, it doesn’t matter where you are, or how many new spots you haven’t grown bored of skating you’re surrounded by. The struggle is real no matter where you go. The only difference is you might not be able to kick it with Sophie that day.

Watch below to see if we made it, or if we did in fact, come to Paris for nothing.

YouTube blocked the video is Canada on account of the fire George Michael song. Canadians!!! Here is a Vimeo link.

Keith been moving calm, don’t start no trouble with Keith

Here’s a belated “spring break” clip from the Kyota and the Frog Skateboards Jr. team. (#TRENDWATCH2018: LNDN DRGS? Didn’t see that one coming…)

Some inspiration for the 30+ crowd — a Patrick Bös part, entitled “Visiting Friends,” of which a ~third is filmed in New York.

New five-minute montage from the guys who everyone spent the past decade ripping off: “Gang Green” via Winnepeg’s Green Apple Skateshop. It’s somewhere between Ty Evans’ Genesis video from 1997, and Sinner in Theatrix.

TWS uploaded a remastered edition of 411VM #3. Philly Metrospective is gold.

Boil the Ocean weighs in on Jason Jessee.

It’s helmet season! Cooper Winterson has a three-minute clip from Riverside Skatepark, which contrary to a fall 2017 QS tee, was not taken by aliens, and has not been demolished for its approved redesign.

“No one knew what kind of permit he needed to operate a ski lift in a snowless area.” Huck usually posts awful stuff pertaining to skateboarding, but they have an interesting-enough article about a dude who retired from winemaking in the late-80s, and tried to essentially make a ski hill but for skateboards outside of Montpellier, France. The video kinda paints a better picture than the photos though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nothing to do with skateboarding but everything to do with skateboarding: the design podcast, 99% Invisible, tells the story of how curb cuts were invented in America.

Spot Updates1) For whatever fortuitous reason, the Parks Department removed the knobs from the runway of the Battery Park City ledge-to-flatbar. Haven’t been here all spring, so not sure how recent it is, but yeah, it’s a go. 2) The scaffolding is off from the Chase steps.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: We’re potentially in for a 4-0 Finals, so here’s Joel Embiid making a funny on a Philadelphia streetball court.

Quote of the Week: “Bro, you should just move to Kips Bay.” — Brengar

This is the best song he’s made since HNDRXX came out. Beast Mode 2 orrrrr…?

Quartersnacks For Nike SB III

Quartersnacks is proud to present its third collaboration with Nike SB, which will be available at skate shops tomorrow, April 14. It will also be available on the QS webstore at 10 A.M. E.S.T. tomorrow. The capsule includes two colorways of a leather SB Blazer XT, a white mesh top, and a ringer tee. A small preview of the capsule and a list of retailers can be found here.

We were inspired by skateboarding’s recent flirtations with color, echoing back to its luminous roots rather than the brown pants era synonymous with this website’s early days. However, the sun did not shine down hard on us as we went out there during the first third of 2018. This clip was filmed in the second and third overtime of winter 2018, with a few free 72-hour trials of spring sprinkled between.

So far, 2018 has been about pushing around with chapped lips, dodging wind, and hoping to stumble on or rediscover something to instill that hope for the warmer days that are out there. Somewhere.
