Getting There, Getting There, Getting There…

This is perhaps the *SECOND* (!) time in this skateboard media enterprise’s modern history that there has been THREE :( Monday Links post to hold the five slots on the homepage. We’re working our way out of this slow news cycle + backend work and should be good to roll with more than two continuous updates to share with you by this time next week. (Hopefully! …but actually!) In the meantime, please enjoy the above image of Justin Henry and Dustin Henry. Photo by Zach Sheats.

O.J. has a cruiser clip with the actual best skater, Jawn Gardner.

Frog collaborated with Noah on a run of printables, and made this six-minute clip fetauring Jesse Alba, Chris Millic, office favorite Krazy Frankie, and Pat Gallaher, with spiritual guidance from self-help guru, Jason Byoun.

“Oh yeah, I remember what that comment said actually. It was like, ‘My 5 year old cousin could make this on Microsoft Paint.’ Do you actually use Microsoft Paint?” Noah also has an interview with Chris about the history of the always-triggering Frog factory.

The Canal crew has a new edit filmed exclusively at the Grand Street basketball courts (I guess we’ve all just been forced to come to terms with that spot to the point of it being an acceptable place to spend an entire day, huh?), and an interview about their brand over on the Office mag site.

…aanndd the latest round of Elkin raw tapes has footage from the spot before its colorful make-over, and good God did it look way more depressing five years ago.

Free has somewhat of an interview / feature about how they came to “get” Sean Pablo, plus The Shady One™ filmed a bit of a “Day in the Life” montage with him on the occasion of his Cons colorway. Shout out to meeting at T.F. West, skating over the Williamsburg Bridge, only to skate back to regular T.F.

Cleardata” is a twelve-minute video that offers a glimpse into what post-apocalyptic Philadelphia skateboarding looks like in 2018.

This one of a bunch of upstate N.Y. dudes doing some non-obvious Paris spots earned a couple rewatches. Always nice when a trip video feels like something more than just a mere footage dump.

E.J. told me Antwerp was his favorite city at one point in time. The #RC-enthusiast POP Trading boys made it a point to film their entire new fall launch montage there.

Under a minute of Alltimers good vibrations via Dana Ericson ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, Chinatown Manny is definitely back in everyone’s rotation

Quote of the Week: “Scootering is a statement.” — Zach Baker

Never need an excuse to post this guy’s music, but Max always somehow sounds better when the weather is like this.

Don’t Care If That Drop-Off Got Some Mileage Mileage

It’s one of those “more words than videos” weeks :)

“But skateboarding’s worldview can often become so totalizing that commitment to it far into adulthood, past the age when it’s socially acceptable to ride around in a school bus smoking weed and listening to Slayer, can look like protracted adolescence. This is why skateboarding, for a large chunk of the country, will never fully outgrow its degenerate associations. And that’s fine.” It is notoriously difficult to produce a genuinely great piece of writing about skateboarding, but Noah Gallagher Shannon’s profile of Grant Taylor ticks all the boxes. Send it to your mom.

The cutest skate interview you’ll ever read: Skate Jawn spoke with Alexis LaCroix about life with his Instagram-famous cat, Rita.

Supreme has a quick Hi-8 Insta clip with Gonz, T.J, Rowan et al. for their upcoming collaboration with Spitfire.

“Love gave you this feeling, and I can’t explain it. Muni does not. At least for me it doesn’t.” Brian Panebianco checks in on a Love-less Philadelphia skate scene.

Sidewalk interviewed the mind behind Science Versus Life, and touched on the connections between New York and London skate history a bit. Your photo incentive check is in the mail btw ;)

With Ripped Laces effectively dormant in 2018 (no shade), The Hundreds blog has oddly been publishing some dece coverage related to the world of skate shoes: “Retracing the Strange History of Shoe Design” + a #listicle of five non-skate shoes that still became tied to skateboarding.

Stefani Nurding has an op-ed piece about how “Girls Nights” have bolstered the acceptance of femininity in skateboarding.

An interview with one of everyone’s favorites, Justin Henry, where he reveals that Lebron James does, in fact, have more J.R. Smith in him than he cares to admit hehe.

This goes a good deal more in depth than his Epicly Later’d, though he isn’t as amorous with nature in it: Jamie Thomas talks to Chad Muska for an hour.

A decent bit of New York footage in feel-good Rob Hall part.

Spot Updates — 1) As you probably caught on already, Skate Jawn built a box to go over the cobblestones at Blue Park. 2) Columbus Park will probably be fine. Fingers crossed. 3) The building moved the planters back in front of the ledge at CBS.

QS Sports Desk: More excited for the off-season, than we were for like, the entire second half of the postseason. And if you think Lebron is coming to the Knicks you need to move to Mars.

Quote of the Week: “Hell no I don’t watch soccer. A bunch of buddies kicking balls? I’m good.” — Meatball

QS is perpetually giving 90% of skate video editors a hard time for their uninspired marriage to Big L + and this idea that basically all rap still needs to sound like nineties rap (how boring does that sound tbh?), but we’ll throw you guys a bone here because there’s a substantial chance you haven’t heard this one before, and it’s really fun:

Obvious first link: Three minutes of Rick Howard B-sides from the past ~five years.

The always brilliant Tennyson Corporation compiled all of Kalis and Stevie’s footage to appear in issues of 411 into fuzzy feeling remix video. Yo all those flip tricks, wow.

2016 Q.S.S.O.T.Y Daniel Kim London footage via “Regulate 005” from Jenkem.

Mark Humienik made a six-minute Hi8 (?) montage of the Bronze boys.

“Man, I’m just trying to live. I ain’t trying to pay no fucking dues. You only pay dues if you want something out of it. I’m not paying anything. I just want to be able to wake up and be able to go skateboard every day.” — An interview with Philly Santosuosso from Humidity Skateshop for Real’s Actions Realized fundraiser.

Damn, so if the 2015 #trendwatch was backside 360ing out of 5050s, is the 2017 #trendwatch doing that no comply backside 360 where your foot doesn’t touch the ground out of 5050s? Who can even keep up man ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

“The resulting photos are personal and gorgeous, using LOVE as a subject to tell its own, final chapter and representing the parable of American urbanism: nothing lasts forever.” Adam Abada re: Jonathan Rentschler’s book on the final years of Love Park.

Someone made an Antonio-only mix of the previous Numbers clip.

Haven’t listened to either yet tbh, because I’m typing this with no headphones from a cafe where the coffee tastes like ramen, but here’s the latest episode of The Bunt with Mark Suciu, and an episode of Thrasher radio with Gonz. You know what to expect ;)

“It seems that defensive architecture, even as it becomes commonplace and increasingly surrounds us, still goes under most people’s radar, which makes the problem all the more insidious.” Village Psychic has a cool interview about using sculpture to raise awareness about how public space is becoming less public.

Boil the Ocean post for those who don’t read Boil the Ocean posts: “In Lieu of Some Longwinded and Semi-Coherent Blog Post, Here’s a Bunch of Justin Henry Tricks.”

Four minutes of Sremmlife B-sides from Mick Robbins.

So happy that Gunplay and Mozzy found each other

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: As everyone mentally shifts from “Wow, the Warriors are going 16-0 in the postseason” to “wow, maybe this is going seven!” — allow us to revisit the complete 2016 timeline of J.R. Smith partying shirtless from Vegas to Cleveland. We thought this shit was going four last year too.

Quote of the Week: “Just wait until I fucking tell the habibis back in New York that they sold me half a chicken with no sauce.” — Josh Velez re: Copenhagen Halal food

Heard it’s finally summer back home ♥ :)

And the summer reminds me of Fetty Wap :( Miss you bro.

Trying to Get Off the Fall-Off List

The QS Sports Desk didn’t have a horse in the playoff race, but it’s pretty obvious that this Cleveland title is both A) the closest New Jersey will ever come to winning a title thanks to Freehold’s J.R. Smithony, West Orange’s Kyrie Irvings, and the back-to-back Finals appearances New Jersey Nets’ Richard Jefferson, and B) the closest the New York Knicks will ever come to winning a title because we now live in a world where Timofey Mozgovonzsky and Iman Shumpert’s hair are NBA Champions. (It’s still fuck Dan Gilbert forever though.) Last night and Game 7 OKC-GSW were the two best basketball games of all time :) lol Melo.

ANYWAY, been pretty bad at updating lately, huh? Should be back to normal programming this week. Sremmlife 2 is delayed and we’re devastated.

Shout out to Sage and TJ for turning pro :)

Are there even people out there whose favorite skater isn’t Max Palmer? Unofficial Frog x 917 demo @ Tompkins via Genesis Evans.

Yaje has a new part out for Venture, where he brings the 2000s back super hard by ending it off with a trick over the Grant’s Tomb four-stair ledge instead one of the banked ledges. Shout out to Ja$onwear x infinity.

“I don’t think we ever really thought of who we were writing for, we did what we wanted to do and what we liked.” Yet another interview about the Big Brother book, but all of them have been pretty great and strangely echo a lot of what’s going on in skateboarding now. (QS review of Shit here btw.)

ON THAT SAME NOTE, you’ve no doubt heard plenty old #oldheads talking about how skating is in some circle (bro) and history repeating itself phase right now a la the post-Bones Brigade era, and while everything it discusses was before my time…thoroughly enjoyed this new Ron Chatman interview about his early career days. “I never did three flips because that was Jason’s shit. I never did impossibles or heelflips because Ed did them. You couldn’t do it better than that.”

Boil the Ocean tackles the growing conspiracy that big shoe companies are deliberately flooding the market with small skateboard brands to dilute the resonance of small shoe brands, or something along the lines of skateboarding’s version of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy? I dunno man.

Transworld was feeling the Non Fiction 2k16 vibes, and picked up LurkNYC’s New York Times outtakes series for their website. Good God that backside flip…

Nice read about what it’s like be a sk8er and work as a professional architect.

Jersey Jersey Jersey… “Meadowlands Promo,” featuring QS favorite Nick Ferro.

“Crybaby,” a new one from the youth.

Here’s the New York-based raw footage from Justin Henry’s OPM part.

Quick interview with Jason Dill over at Place.

Samsung is doing a retrospective event on R.B. Umali’s work later today.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Pipe it up.

Quote of the Week: “The room was $140, but ended up being $500 because my girl picked up the walnuts.” — Carl Williams

I mean, who doesn’t love a good vocal interpolation of a truck backing up? Decisions..

R.I.P. BPC Wall Rail

battery park rip

One of the premier destinations for “Summer Trip to New York” montage enders, and the most oft-back smithed obstacle in skateboarding’s multi-century history is no more. Well, technically, it’s still there, but someone with quick reflexes will have to hippie jump over a park bench half-a-millisecond after landing.

At a time when wall rail skating was stagnating at 5050 grinds, the Battery Park City rail was there to spur progression by being a mere two inches more away from the wall than your average wall rail. Even though larger humans like Brian Anderson were forced to modify their skateboard decks to fit their larger feets on the rail, the spot was a burgeoning epicenter of crooked grinds, flip-in tricks, and switch tricks while everyone else was stuck skating other wall rails with two trucks. It was just beginning a shockingly ahead-of-its-time nollie phase with Justin Henry’s “OPM” part, until its life was cut short with a skate deterrent more effective than the chalk on the ground reading “No Skateboarding” that was previously employed by those living within earshot of the heavily trafficked spot. Thanks to Vintage Sponsor for the tip.

While this might not be the brightest news for the city’s youth as we approach a 70-degree weekend, you could rest assured that Sremmlife 2 is on the way to wash away all your woes. Grab a cup, catch a vibe.
