YO, massive shout out to the crew, politicians, shops and community in Providence, Rhode Island, on getting an approval to turn an underused corner of their downtown into a full-on block of a skate plaza. Let this be a precedent for cities across the U.S.

Technically it’s the *second* post of the year after the online DANY video premiere (YouTube link here btw), but let’s not screw tradition up yaknow :)

As always, let’s get anything pertinent to the last year out of the way: 1) Tiago, Hjalte and Jerry Hsu round out the top three of Boil the Ocean’s ten best of 2016 countdown. 2) Better Skate Than Never is always good for a round-up of largely independent web clips that stood out. Their top 30 of 2016 is a nice reminder to rewatch Hjalte’s Jonas Skrøder part. 3) Ripped Laces runs down the best skate shoes of last year.

E.J. started to post bits and pieces of the DANY video over on his Vimeo page. You could still purchase hard copies of the video over at The Dany Store as well. Or if you want to get weird, we also saw it for sale at a barber shop in Japan, so…

Genny’s part is the first to go live, and it’s every bit as beast as sports analysts thought it would be when he was rolling away from the aforementioned varial flip. This video was what ushered in the wave of people skating the bad ledge at Houston Park again (also the inspiration for this post from March), so its chill to see this generation still keeping up with Anthony Correa’s business practices from Mixtape by placing a mid-line can on the pathway.

Thank you to everyone who bought something from the webstore. The response was stronger than expected and we’re still catching up on orders. Damn, back in my day, skate video titles had TWO words. Fully Flared, Menik Mati, Yeah Right… ANYWAY, Drama is the new kinda full-length (15 min) from Harry Bergenfield, Evan Pacheco and the youth, filmed mostly in the city but with a decent bit of Jersey footage. Been fun to watch these get better and better. Everyone obviously starts out with their influences and eventually matures into something unique if they keep at it. Shout out to the boy Ingmar.

To each his own, but the fact that people are making dedicated tribute videos to the “Brownsville Banks” A.K.A. the Beef Patty Banks (or wait, should we have been calling them the Space Heater Banks this entire time?) goes to show how sad the quality of [low bust] spots in this city has become. Cool video though.

Jenkem interviewed the original brand manager behind Ghetto Child wheels about relaunching the brand in 2016, and the heyday of Muska selling 10,000 boards a month. It also reminded me of Child of the Ghetto, which then reminded me of this 2012 New York Magazine profile of G. Dep, which is so, so dark.
