Frozen in Carbonite composed an interesting venn diagram for Pretty Sweet and Parental Advisory, the two marquee skate videos of the holiday season. Though “current rap, unironically” might belong in the middle, as “2Pac Back” was Pretty Sweet‘s only current rap song, and it was utilized in an appropriate way.

In the spirit of list season, Boil the Ocean has begun to count down the top ten skate parts of 2012. Joseph Delgado’s 56k part took the tenth slot.

Speaking of which, the director behind “this year’s best-made video” put together a 56k-esque Bill Pierce part for Roger Skateboards.

Rob Harris is releasing a video entitled Dece Vid on January 20th with a full part of the most recent Yaje Popson footage and cameos from a bunch of others. Teaser here.

This new Skate Jawn montage may be the first skate clip with footage at Fulton Mall.

Rob Gonyon becoming irate with entitled New York bicyclists (seriously, that “DON’T YOU GUYS KNOW THIS IS A *BIKE* LANE?!?!”-contingent of society is the worst) and doing chill street lines.

Mark Suciu and friends at Lenox Ledges and other less-interesting destinations in New York. The switch powerslide at the Bronx Courthouse after the back 180 is impressive considering how tight that landing space is. Dude’s good.

(There is no reason why Roc Marciano shouldn’t join Big L and Jeru the Damaja in the ranks of go-to music to edit New York skate clips to. “Paid for the necklace and ate breakfast.”)

A [Not-At-All] Comprehensive Guide to Prominent Jewish Pro Skateboarders

A few weeks ago, we discovered a song by Trill Entertainment affiliates Lil’ Mal and the late Lil’ Phat entitled “That’s My Ju.” After listening to it 400 times, our editors called a late-day meeting, vowing to work deep into the night on a series of storyboards for an “All Jewish Skateboarder Re-Edit” to this outstanding piece of work. They were not even halfway done with their first pot of coffee before hitting a wall. There really aren’t that many Jewish pro skaters… Wait, are there any at all? As the “All Jewish ‘That’s My Ju’ Re-Edit” started to seem like a fleeting possibility, we desperately called for help in the social media realm, with few concrete findings that link people of Jewish origin to the world of professional skateboarding.

Frozen in Carbonite Instagrammed pictures of a ‘zine produced in 1993 that tackles this subject. The ranks have not changed much in twenty years. In fact, Jordan Richter converted to Islam, so the ‘zine’s headlining Jewish skater isn’t even Jewish anymore. Several Twitter sources suggested Mike York and Julien Stranger, and Danny Weiss might apply if he rode a skateboard for more than two hours each year, but Jewish representation remains strangely thin in pro skateboarding. Perhaps the two or three up-and-coming Jewish skateboarders could procure a Not Another Gentile Skateboard Video and allow us to edit the friends section to “That’s My Ju.” (A “HYFR” ender section is also an absolute-must.)

Until then, enjoy “That’s My Ju” as a standalone song. Or suggest that a Jewish friend who skates use it for a part. R.I.P. Lil’ Phat.

Normally, we’d shout out Amare Stoudemire right about now, but that dude lost a fight with a fire extinguisher, so screw him.

Going Solo, First CD Out That’s Not Slow-Mo

After repeatedly giving The New York Times a hard time about this awful article, we have to give them credit for a great Times Magazine feature on skateboarding in Uganda. Is there any way this generation’s student loan debt could get funneled towards building skateparks in Uganda instead of going back to some stupid bank?

Also in the realm of reputable-mainstream-publications-writing-about-skating, The New Yorker has a solid article about Transworld‘s “30 Most Influential” list. (Here’s the QS post from last winter regarding the “most influential” subject.)

Most have seen this by now, but Josh Stewart filmed a “Night in the Life”-type segment with Jahmal Williams and the Hopps team for the “RIDE” channel on YouTube. Jahmal Williams footage + black & white = always a win.

“As PJLWHL recedes into skate lore, the narrative of how a couple dudes from Boston with impeccable musical taste founded a shop that produced the one of the most transcendent video parts ever remains almost as interesting as the video itself. Shit would be a sick movie. In a tremendous blow to the world of online skateboarding content, Skate.ly removed all 411 issues from its library. Does anyone have a link for the Roc-A-Fella issue?

Spot Updates: 1) The Parks Department filled in the crack at Tompkins. E.J. is bummed. 2) Those rails on 95th and Columbus, which maybe three people skate every year, are blocked off by scaffolding.

Happy skate industry P.R. initiative day. The new Lower East Side / Manhattan Bridge / Coleman skatepark is opening today (a bunch of photos of the completed park here), we’re having record-high temperatures in the northeast, and may be twelve hours away from living in a world where Eddy Curry is a NBA champion (F that, OKC in 7) — but those aren’t the biggest stories of summer 2012’s first full day. Skateboarding’s Library of Congress equivalent, Skate.ly/library, uploaded the 2003 Lordz video, They Don’t Give a Fuck About Us A.K.A. the video that stole the switch backside 5-0 copyright from Brian Wenning A.K.A. maybe the best Euro video ever, in full. (This relates back to the best Euro sweatpants skater post from three weeks ago…)

So if you’re staying in today, and cranking up your ConEd bill while enjoying the invention of air conditioning, watch it in all its Euro-ized-versions-of-classic-rap-instrumentals and perfect-spot-having glory.

When I watch TDGAFAU now, Daft Punk and them have added a new dimension to the already-intense Euro Theater of the mind–an aural counterpart to the pristine football field-sized marble plazas, Louis XIV-era office buildings, and textbook switch back 5/0’s, hinting at what lays in wait post-sesh in the city of lights. Marfaing–up there on the short list of dudes who should be millionaires from skating–tattooed his name on the metaphorical ass [nullus] of a spot like few others have.
