From the Cell Block to the Skate Spot

We cut a few prices on some remaining QS gear in anticipation of fall items.

Much like Riff Raff is the undisputed king of Vine (sooo spring 2013, right?), Lucas Puig is perhaps the only Instagram user making good use of the app’s video function. He put together a brief “Best Of” video of his straight-to-Instagram tricks. Also, why exactly didn’t he skate to “I Can’t Wait” in Bon Voyage?

There’s a new minimal, manual-friendly skate park in Bushwick, similar to the one that popped up in Park Slope two years back. More of these please.

Though they are less “minimal,” Templeton from Mostly Skateboarding put together a cool #listicle of the most innovative skateparks on earth for Complex.

Yaje Popson came back from Brazil and is still really good at skateboarding.

One of Yaje’s friends, Luke Clerkin, has a fun midtown night session clip online, too. It can easily get frustrating, but its still tough to think of a spot more fun than a good night in midtown. (P.S. The ground is fixed at that wallride on 65th Street.)

Some stuff that has been online for a bit (i.e. content that is ~five days old): Jake Johnson came back to the city and destroyed everything in thirty seconds, Alex Olson skated New York for a bit and then went to Iceland to exfoliate, Huf put out the obligatory “Summer Trip to NY” clip with some lesser seen spots (fakie boardslide down Black Hubba is nuts), and Chris Nieratko ran down the history of New York’s first skateboard company for ESPN.

The New York Times had some skate-related content in the past week: an article on preserving the first skatepark ever built in New York (and still the only public vert ramp in the city, right?), and a site feature on some of Allen Ying’s photos.

QS tees are now available at Supreme London and Los Angeles, in addition to Orchard Skateshop in Boston. Supreme London should have Alltimers RiRi and Lambo cruisers in now, and Los Angeles should be getting them soon.

Okay, before anything else: Several days ago, the guy who stands in Times Square with the “I Need Money for Weed” sign stabbed the guy who stands in Times Square with the “I Need Beer” sign with a pen….and the guys who dress up as Alien and Predator for tourist photo-ops were called in as witnesses.

The new Bronze video, Solo Jazz, comes out this August, as per their Facebook. Check the teaser from a few months back in case you missed it.

Also in the realm of hardware, our homie Jonah Miller started a hardware company out of Portland called Bolts, which is particularly tailored to people who double as skateboarder AND gambler degenerates. The new Tony Carr part is fun and “creative” without trying too hard. Dude rips.

With the expected demise of Vine, the Dobbin Block crew wasted no time and compiled some of their collective Vine highlights into a montage.

Another entry to the growing “Summer Trip to New York 2013” cycle, filmed entirely from above on a glidecam.

The video itself seems a bit old (namely because there are spots that haven’t been around since 2008 in it), but the Shred NJ crew uploaded their 35-minute project, The Pie, on Vimeo last week.

Synths, Irony & Robots: A Chronicle of Daft Punk Music Supervision in Skate Videos

Every skate site was obligated to have a “Dill & AVE Off Alien”-post, and every website on the entire internet is required to mention the new Daft Punk album. Combined with the release of Kendrick Lamar’s debut last fall and next month’s Kanye album, we are in an eight-month rut of opinion onslaught from an unholy trio of annoying fanbases.

…but even skateboarders are talking about Daft Punk! Skaters previously only acknowledged electronic music when posting “wtf iz with dis song?” comments on video parts that dared to use it. And now they’re interested in dance music? Instead of giving an opinion about Random Access Memories like everyone else on the internet, here’s an abridged history of how Daft Punk, and in turn, electronic music as a whole, achieved acceptance in skate videos.

So, please note that this is a North American timeline. Accounting for European usage of electronic music adds another dimension entirely. Frozen in Carbonite wrote about French house, French Fred, etc. back in 2011, so read that for a more worldly take.]

#TRENDWATCH2013: “Chic Skater Turbans”

Never one for banality, the dreamboat pro who brought you four-figure griptape continues to fuse together skateboarding and high fashion. Much like how girls and the companies that sell them things re-appropriated the headscarves of observant Muslim women into an overpriced luxury item, Alex Olson adopted a traditional Tom Penny t-shirt head wrap into something for fashion-forward skaters in warm climates (note the intricacies of how it is tied.) Though your average non-triangular skater #trend evades the female eye (e.g. girls only like camo on themselves, on other girls, and in theory), Liv Tyler, star of the documentary film, Armageddon, took notice and offered her compliments via a Max B adlib.

While Penny may have intended utilitarian purposes with his creation, Alex’s astute fashion sense couldn’t let this pass as a mere summertime cool-off device. Expect his pro model skater turban and signature griptape to debut at this upcoming New York Fashion Week in Chanel’s F/W 2013 Ready-To-Skate collection. Owwwwww!!!

Happy (belated?) 2013. Had to take the first week off. Anyone else make it through 2012 without finding out what Honey Boo Boo was or actually hearing “Gangnam Style?”

The First & Possibly Last Ever Installment of QS Sneaker News: 1) This is what New Balance skate shoes look like. P.J. Ladd seems to be their first teamrider, but bringing in Larry David might’ve been more of a power move. When is Saucony jumping in? 2) This is what Dylan Reider’s Alex Olson’s Vans pro model would’ve looked like. 3) Guess who else is making skate shoes? Got ’em. 4) Looking for crusty size 13 Jordan 4s that were retroed in 1999? Skate around the West Village.

ATTN British people and other Europeans: Lost Art out in Liverpool will be carrying QS tees online and in-store this week, in the event that you don’t want to pay $30 shipping from the U.S. for a $25 shirt. For everyone else, black larges are sold out but all other sizes/colors are still available in our webstore.

Crailtap released a minute-long clip of Brian Anderson Pretty Sweet B-sides, and as a result, Quartersnacks will be offering its first ever internship position. We’re looking for part-time interns to re-dub skate noises over full quality Pretty Sweet footage of anyone in the video over 30 and Alex Olson’s part (Cory Kennedy’s pleasant surprise of a part is perfect as is) for re-edit purposes. Compensation will come in the form of maybe $100, drink tickets and first dibs on the aforementioned and any future pair of Jordans discovered on the street.

This clip contains more Rob Campbell footage than any other in recent history and a Woody Allen homage at the beginning.

The teaser for the new PIT Crew video has a Tyler Tufty cameo (sorry about the Redskins) and looks like it will be an all-around sick video.

There’s a new follow up to last year’s Be Pretty video and draws inspiration for its music supervision from a much beloved New York skate video. Teaser here.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: What else could it be? J.R. Smith’s ultra fast-motion reverse alley oop off a pass that was too low for an alley oop. (Honorable mention: JaVale Mcgee dunking on two of his own teammates.)
