Frontside Flip: The Movie (Dir. Salomon Cardenas, 2024)

Fans of Switch Flip: The Movie can rejoice: just as he had last year, Salomon Cardenas spent 365 days documenting every person he knew doing a single flip trick on flat. And as you likely gathered from the title, it was a regular stance frontside kickflip.

Unlike the subject of last year’s film, the frontside flip is not skateboarding’s great equalizer like the switch flip is. If you have a decent-enough kickflip, you can do a “frontside flip.” You’d have to be playing S.K.A.T.E. with a real asshole for them to not let you get away with doing a kickflip ten degrees to the left and pivoting the remaining 170 degrees on defense.

But even for the people who can do them without the pivot cheat-code, it takes an indescribable ✨ something ✨ to make a frontside flip truly special. Like, if we got a focus group together and did word association, how many people are saying “Andrew Reynolds” after “frontside flip?” 90%? 100%? [Spoiler: Andrew Reynolds’ busy schedule prevented him from appearing in Frontside Flip: The Movie.] Village Psychic knew what they were doing when they went straight to the source to discuss the rules of utilizing your “signature trick.”

For much of the video, you’re just watching …frontside flips. And when that special one pops up, you simply know that it’s …well, special.

And the ending? Wasn’t expecting it to turn into a romance, but a bit of romance is what we all need during these cold, tumultuous times ❤️ Congrats to Sully on getting hitched! 💍
