Frozen in Carbonite Presents… Song of the Summer x Video Part of the Summer 2021: Da Return

Words by Frozen in Carbonite

Early this summer, Hulu released a Rick James documentary — a tour de force that I cannot recommend highly enough. In addition to the “trip the fuck out” moment of James being in a band with Neil Young, the film features a number of “reenactments” using 3D computer animation. These reenactments depict some really wild shit, including, yes, a coke-fueled orgy.

You know — what summer 2021 was supposed to have been!

This guy nollie flipped Black Hubba, and then followed it up with the highest white rapper ever done in skateboard history. But also he nollie flipped Black Hubba.

Speaking of nollies, The Bunt’s latest episode is with nollie legend and Antwuan Dixon’s favorite skateboarder, Gailea Momolu. Monster Children also interviewed Cephas and Donovan about their ascent to the top of skating’s current pod boom.

“What did you buy with your first check?” “Nothing. Them shits is in the bank.” Monster Children also has an interview with smart kid Tyshawn Jones.

Jack Greer’s film, Circles in Tompkins Square is now available on Vimeo On Demand.

“If you land it this try, I’ll go vegan for the rest of the trip.” Vinny Ponte interviews Zered Bassett about the old days for twenty minutes.

Three-minute reminder of how poetic Javier Sarmiento looks on a skateboard.

Labor’s All City Showdown installment is now live over on Thrasher, with stock music straight out of the EST archives. The Frog/Max Palmer section is gold, Jerry. Gold.

Skaters from Atlanta really like that manny pad to rock at 20th & C.

Adam Louis put together a montage of Johnny’s outtakes featuring all the 917 dudes. The world needs another Genny part and can we get Kohlton skating again?

Someone compiled a bunch of Bill Strobeck’s IG videos into one convenient clip.

Pretty much everyone in our age group and under looked up to Rodney Torres growing up. First New Yorker to flip into a handrail (pretty sure…), first to hit the Hooters Rail (R.I.P.), etc. “The King of Queens” is a quick video portrait by Carlos Felipe. Chrome Ball’s Rodney post has also been an all-time fave.

Theories of Atlantis, champion of all things independent and #small in skateboarding, put together a year-end list of 2016’s best videos, a month late ;)

“However, the recently proffered notion that Chad Muska’s ‘illusion’ frontside flips looked good, wrongheaded as it is, speaks to a similar, latent yearning for diversity in trick form that seems to have been squeezed out in the online video age.” If no complies, beanplants, pressure flips and noseslide shoves can come back, there’s little reason to believe the mob or illusion flip won’t become a fashionable alternative to the tricks’ homogenized norms/forms by April of this year.

An interesting read on just how Brexit impacts the skate industry in the U.K.

Paul Young uploaded four minutes of raw footage from a 2015 S.F. trip with Josh Wilson, Brendan Carroll, Adrian Vega, Tierney, Duster, Dick Rizzo and Nick Ferro.

Here’s to happier times in Atlanta ♥

QS x DGK coming next month.

Cee Lo, the new one from LurkNYC, is great. Sick spots (probably the most astute prop grate finders working today), a soundtrack sure to please anyone who’s ever left a “you guys actually like this?”-comment on a Quartersnacks YouTube video, and an awesome ender part from John Shanahan (above) that will be on repeat for the foreseeable future. Fakie bigspin manny line was a real crowd pleaser :) Also, those security guards at the gold rail on 52nd Street might be the worst in the city…

New interview with Gino Iannucci in Italy’s Brief Glance mag. Starts on page 37.

The 550 Wheels promo begins with what’s basically a full, new Ron Deily part. (There’s a junk spot successor already?) Also has a Kevin Taylor appearance.

Max Palmer Presents: A new barrier at the Bushwick Blue Park.

An iPhone video from Jesse Alba, a Blackberry (yeah) clip from E.J., and a handycam video from Rob Harris.

John Valenti’s Local Express video is online in full. New full Caddo part.

“What advice can you give someone wanting to work in skateboarding?” “Whatever it is you want to do, just start doing it on your own. Shoot photos how you want, film how you want, put up your videos, reach out to the companies you want to work for…” Skateboard Story has a solid interview with Transworld‘s Blair Alley about still working at one of the remaining print publications left in skateboarding.

SMLTalk chronicles the stylistic evolution of Robert Welsh.

Matt Nordess at the top-10 worst ledge and less bad places for Labor Skateshop.

QS faves, Budapest’s Rios Crew, goes to Croatia.

An interview with everyone’s fave Scandinavian beast, Hjalte Halberg.

Couple quick New York clips in Flo Mirtain’s new part for Jenkem.

Is riding over the full length of a car a NBD?

The odds being stacked against company comebacks never stops anyone from trying.

A skate tour through Alaska with Brock, Worrest, etc.

It’ll always be Pigeon Shit Double-Set to me ;)

Turn audio on for maximum effect.

If you ask 100 people to give you the twenty best Young Thug songs of 2015, you’re going to get 100 different mixes. Provided you don’t want to sift through five thousand songs, Hotbox Social did a pretty good job of condensing his past twelve months into ninety minutes of music — though you’d probably wanna include “Dome,” “Numbers,” “Bang Bang,” “Pacifier” — actually no, it’s sorta impossible…

QS Sports Desk: Going to switch it up a bit this week and link an article. I thoroughly enjoyed this new interview with Real Sports‘ Bryant Gumbel. His whole “as you age, you care less and less about what a bunch of 20-year-olds are doing”-thing is something I often try to remind [30+] people pontificating on the [non-existent] “death” of skate videos. Sk8 videos r 4 the youths man.

Quote of the Week: “He showed up to the skatepark in a cashmere poncho.” — Dom Travis

Still some beanies [and assorted sizes of fall goods] left in the webstore, even though it’s going to be seventy degrees on Christmas Eve

Day zero and beyond ♥ TF @ 1: Ten Years of Quartersnacks available now.

HD video blog #16 from Johnny Wilson and friends.

Los Angeles-based video blog from Andrew (?!?!) Wilson?!?!

Bob Shirt’s ten-minute video interview with Joey Alvarez is earnest and informative. He runs through the history of little-known companies like C.R.E.A.M and Metropolitan, shares some Banks stories, and talks about Keith Harrison — whose twenty-year-old Seaport line predicted an entire sub-sect of L.E.S. park street style.

The Riverside Park resurgence is already in full swing.

New B-sides clip from the Report Potholes / In Crust We Trust squad. #jersey

Someone remixed all of Tiago’s [park] footage from the D.C. tour video, which includes what is more than likely the greatest switch pop shove it ever done in human history.

Here’s a promo for the Bailar video that includes Shredmaster Keith shredding around Soho. Video due out next month. Looks like a good time.

“People in smaller cities with abandoned ball/tennis courts seem like the have the more fun skating than anyone in Los Angeles or New York.” — Roc

On that same note…new one from the Sex Hippies squad in Western Mass.

I’m guessing you probably caught on to the new #streetlife-heavy F.A./Hockey clip? Pretty sure Ben K. is the first one to ever slide that rail off the eight-stair at CBS.

When the recent past isn’t as recent as you think: Bobby Worrest recaptured. Back 3 curb cut + backside 180 switch crook from Right Foot Forward is an all-time great.

Five trick fix from switch and nollie pop king, Brendan Carroll.

Thanksgiving at the Bushwick Blue Park

Menace is back! …in enamel pin form.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: We’re big on assists at the Sports Desk. Sad this guy is spending the foreseeable future in playoff spot-chasing territory.

Quote of the Week: “If English was my first language, I’d be a famous comedian.” — Chuck MVP

^^^Best sports rap song in who knows how long, but that’s a biased opinion from someone who discovered NBA basketball during peak Penny/Shaq Orlando era ;)

Tryna Skate Some Flat and Eat Caviar

It’s that time of the year again when Khaled goes skateboarding.

Before you read anything in this post, please donate whatever you can (even $5 helps) to Kevin Tierney’s new knee fund. We’ll consider it a personal favor.

Guess the word is out on this one. Proud to say QS will be releasing a ten-year anniversary book on Powerhouse this fall, entitled TF at 1. It’s a fun look back at the past decade give-or-take of the extended family that surrounds this website. More details later this year. Keep an eye out for snippets on Instagram.

Jamal Smith tests out Stevie Williams’ DC pro model from ~2001. Possibly the best skate clip of the year. “Stevie, don’t fuck me up when you see this.”

The new Sabotage 4 trailer is great. Includes a full Dylan Sourbeer part.

The list of people who look as good as peak-era Rob Welsh on a skateboard is in the single digits. Also, since skateboarders love rappers from the nineties so much that we’re still editing to songs off The Sun Rises in the East fifteen years after Static 1 came out, you guys might be interested to learn that a lot of those rappers are still making music in 2015!

The Iron Claw crew opened up a new shop in Bushwick called Rollgate Skates, which buys, sells and trades skate gear. 867 Broadway in Bushwick, by Broadway-Myrtle J.

Bust Crew has been posting some chill IG clips of their trip to New York. Just when you thought there were no new ways to skate the Chinatown manual pad

Dave Mayhew still rips. “The whiteboys be like totally.”

The 2014 Thrasher Skater of the Year on not having an Instagram.

“In terms of visibility and reach, the Thrasher part gives the skater the prime-time spot, and to have one of these nowadays is almost like being a contestant on America’s Got Talent that made it to the next round. Everyone gets to see your part for that day, but next week there’s a whole other round of contestants to replace you.” SMLTalk with a funny one about the most awfully titled Thrasher parts. “The Raybourn Identity” is insane, though we called something “Djosh Unchained” before, so…

Sidewalk has a pretty in-depth and candid interview with Austyn Gillette about life since suffering a double knee injury a year ago.

New Jersey handrail skating circa 1999 oh yeah.

R.I.P. to the Pigeon Shit Double-Set on 40th and Broadway. It lead a terrible life.

Here are the TWO winners of the Jason Byoun remix contest. Considering both of them incited equal amounts of laughter, it wasn’t fair to just let one win. Check your emails. Make sure to watch the first one through the end :)
