Rockaway Rails

Spots: Queens — Other Neighborhoods

Spot: The best handrail spot in New York City is a 23 mile drive from Downtown Manhattan. That might not be much by west coast standards, but it’s otherwise unheard of in New York.

The rails are all thick, two-inch squares, and down a pretty big set of seven. They’re all average height, with perfect runways and landings. A whole bunch of tricks have gone down on these, so do your research beforehand so you’re not infringing on ABD territory. There are some benches in the back (seen in Josh Kalis’ line from The DC Video…front blunt the bench, nollie half cab, and switch tailslide the rail), and a long flatrail running alongside a handicap, but it has been under scaffolding for quite some time.

Bust — ♦♦ / Occasional: Very rarely, there will be security guards patrolling the exterior of the building. The campus is huge, so they usually stay confined to one side, which is not near the main rails. Though the school has been shut down by the city because of poor performance, it’s still best to come on a weekend, in the summer, or on a holiday. And don’t come here during the winter, it’s on a peninsula in the middle of Jamaica Bay. The cold wind will be treacherous.

Location: At Beach Channel High School, located on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 101st Street in Far Rockaway, Queens. Far Rockaway has its name because it’s…far. It’s best to drive here, as its 23 miles away on the Long Island Expressway. The train ride takes an hour-and-a-half. If you insist on doing it, take the A to Broad Channel, transfer to the S and take it to Beach 98th Street. Walk one block north on Beach 98th Street, make a left, and you will see the school in two blocks.
