Spots: Queens — Other Neighborhoods

Spot: JFK is one of the first New York spots to appear in a skate video, as it was featured in Mike Valley’s Rubbish Heap section in the late 1980s. Since then, it has been a salivating sight for any skater landing in New York. The banks are mid-sized in terms of steepness, with some sections being only three feet tall, and others growing to be about five or six. The entire bank has a foot-and-a-quarter high ledge on the top, that has been waxed at certain portions for both grinds and slides. People usually choose to hit the ledge by approaching it perpendicularly from the hip. The banks are built on generic tile sidewalk, and generally devoid of any major cracks.
Bust — ♦♦♦ / Half-and-half: The sporadic bust is a major downfall to this spot. It’s an airport, so naturally cops patrol it all the time, but half of the time, they will not care if you skate there. Your chances depend on sheer luck, which is annoying considering it is a half hour drive to the airport plus tolls, and you have to pay for parking to skate the banks.
Location: Terminal 6 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Jamaica, Queens. It’s not worth taking a train out here, because it involves two transfers and shuttle buses. Driving is the only real option, and it’s 18 miles from Downtown Manhattan on Van Wyck Expressway. Look up directions to Terminal 6.
