South Street Seaport

Spots: Downtown Manhattan — Financial District

Spot: This is not as prominent of a location for spots as it once was due to the more frequented portions of the spot being skatestopped and renovated in 2002 and 2003, but over the years, people have began to skate other portions of the spot that used to be untouched.

The most obvious obstacle is the big wooden four set, equivalent to your average eight set. It has infinite runway, and a good landing – the only problem is that it is completely made out of wood. The surface itself is smooth enough to quickly gather up speed, so the cracks in the wood don’t really slow you down rolling up to it. The problems begin when you bail on a trick, and your palms end up receiving their share of the impact, and thus, an inevitable amount of splinters spread throughout your hands. There is also a steep eight stair rail nearby that people have done several tricks over throughout the years descending down the eight, but it is far to steep to grind or slide down.

Otherwise, there is a curb cut to a two-foot high pillar that people have been known to do tricks over, some wooden benches and a very steep basement door forming a bank positioned at the end of a two stair platform, onto which you can ride down after popping a trick from the perpendicular platform.

Bust — ♦♦♦ / Half-and-half: The big four has a very sporadic bust factor. It’s best to go Monday through Thursday, usually during the colder seasons because there are probably going to be people sitting all over the steps otherwise. Your chances of getting kicked out are 50/50, but typically you can skate for at least a half hour before that happens. To avoid the security guard, walk to the four instead of skating there so it is harder for them to spot you. Security around here usually does not bother you when you skate the other obstacles.

Location: South Street and Fulton Street. Take the A, C, 4, 5, J, M or Z to Broadway-Nassau Street / Fulton Street, and skate east on Fulton until you reach the water. Everything is dispersed throughout the region. The four is located at the northeast corner of the pier. The other stuff is several blocks south alongside South Street, near Wall Street.
