The Best Skate Videos & Parts of 2023 — QS Readers Poll Results

📊 Ballot Count by 4Ply Magazine

The results are in: a time-capsule of 2023 skateboarding, as voted by QS readers. Some old favorites have returned to the rankings, and some new ones have emerged.

And yes, it should be stated, perhaps louder than in other years, that year-end rankings are an imperfect artform. Miles Silvas’ “City To City” part that would eventually land him Thrasher‘s S.O.T.Y. trophy premiered a few hours before voting for the QS Readers Poll closed (that didn’t stop him from getting some votes in those final moments though.) Yuto dropped his April part three days after voting closed. But we are committed to the belief that nobody wants to talk about 2023 after Christmas. And for a year when it felt like Skateboard Oscars Season™ began in August, we had to make the call. All those parts that missed the cutoff will be eligible for next year’s voting, same as years past.

If you are just joining us, this ranking was voted on by QS readers from December 4th to December 8th. If you’re interested in the methodology, 4PLY broke down how we tally the votes

From Squamish to Seoul — Etienne Gagne’s ‘Etienne 2023’ Part

📝 Interview by Doyun Baeg
📹 Video by Baltimore Loth

What’s good with the tuxedo?

Oh shit, the tuxedo. It was during Halloween time in Japan, and Balti [E.T’s videographer for this video] and I were taking the train. We saw this guy who had like a Superman shirt under a suit. He would unbutton his button-up shirt and had the Superman logo popping out, I remember being like: “that’s so sick.”

And then I was looking for a costume. I went and got a Uniqlo suit. We tried to find a Superman shirt, but there was nothing. So I just ended up wearing a suit and I was going with the flow of what everybody was telling me what I was.

“Oh, like, are you American Psycho?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh, are you James Bond?”

“Yeah.”

I was supposed to be Superman, but fuck it. And then one day, Popeye magazine from Japan asked me to do an interview for them. They told me to bring my board. I didn’t know what to wear. I showed up with a suit on and they took a photo of me. They were like: “What the fuck, this isn’t what E.T. usually wears…”

#QSTOP10 — Top 10 of 2023

This might be the, let’s say, “gnarliest” year-end countdown we’ve done. Something about this year really made people wanna throw themselves down rails n’ hubbas n’ shit.

Congrats on making it through another 100 billion hours of skate videos this year. These are the ten clips that made us shout, scream and text our friends. Maybe your circle brought up a clip in actual conversation a lot that isn’t in these ten, but these are the ten that got brought up the most in ours.

The #QSTOP10 desk will be on vacation for the next two weeks. The countdown will return on Friday, January 5. Thanks for watching this year, and even bigger thanks to everyone for stacking, filming and hucking ❤️

#QSTOP10 — December 15, 2023

Figure there won’t be a ton of future opportunities (never say never) to give the 55-year-old Tony some Top 10 placement on account of him announcing “Tapes You Leave Behind” will be his last part. He’s already got a song named after him on 2023’s best rap album, but if there’s one thing missing from his illustrious career, it’s top honors on #QSTOP10 ;)

Tried to mix it up a bit so it wasn’t a full-on “best of the Thrasher homepage” edition.

That Cody Chapman part is so good. Marcelle Aiha’s part on Free rules too. Not bailing on that ollie into the signpost after clipping is just, yeah, wow.

This will be the last weekly countdown for two weeks. Top 10 of 2023 coming next week.

Have a good weekend ❤️
