Dos Sandias — Official Press Release

September 6th, 2008 | 2:38 pm | Daily News | 3 Comments

NEW YORK CITY — September 6, 2007 2:34 P.M.

Random ten-year-old at Woodward: “Is this going to be on YouTube or something?”
Watermelon Alex: Hell no, Sanchez only, bitch.”

The official version of the best east coast video in the past fifty years recently arrived after the majority of its post-production was done in India in between giving beer cans to monkeys and chasing Indian girls.

This DVD has the best menu in the history of DVD menus, the original 24 minute video, and four bonus features. The main bonus section is 42 minutes long, and basically the sketchier version of the video in itself, with a soundtrack that ranges from Parliament to Party Alarm to the dancehall remix of “Soul Survivor.” There is also a Woodward section, featuring Watermelon Alex, Jon Newport, Brian Brown and Lurker Lou breaking into parks and hopping gaps with BMX bikes, hustling popsicles to twelve year olds, and getting young kids to say obscene things. I happen to have a pretty strong suspicion that Alex was drunk during the entire time at Woodward. The other two sections are a Mexico section and a Ghana section that don’t make that much sense, but are amazing in their own right.

The best video parts of the year are as follows: 1. Ben Nazario in Dos Sandias 2. Little Chris in Dos Sandias 3. Alex Mosley in Dos Sandias 4. Jake Johnson in Dos Sandias 5. Danny Weiss’ line in Dos Sandias

In all seriousness, the new Watermelon video deserves a place in the canon of classic New York City skate videos. There are no handrails or grass gaps. No flashy editing or stupid titles. Just 100% creative street skating and a culmination of what skating in the city is actually like. On top of everything, it is a perfect example of how spot choices can really enhance the enjoyability of a video. This one is bound to send a few people to the Spots board on Official New York. Above all, it contains a line at Lenox Ledges that does not involve skating the ledges.

Copies should be available in the near future. I’ve been put in charge of distribution, so the two places they will inevitably be are Autumn and this website.

While on the topic of videos, the 2nd Nature video is available at Autumn for $8. Contains Brian Brown’s third part this past year, and Jose Pereyra’s anticipated part, which surpasses what you would typically expect from a shop video. All in all, its a solid 25-minutes of skating, without any nonsense sprinkled between.

Speaking of which, Ty Evans is an asshole for the way he put together Lucas Puig’s part in the Cliché remix video. Anybody who says they enjoyed it, or “appreciated” it is an asshole, and a liar. It is never a good sign when you start to fast forward past somebody’s intro, only to realize that the entire part is in slow motion once the credits start to roll and you’re still fast forwarding.

The best eBay auction ever if you’re a fan of 90s skateboarding.

..and for the record, Nas is officially the worst. If he had a decent album to back up looking like a kook, it would be ok in my book. But unfortunately that is not the case. Any artist who wears purple jeans is immediately disqualified from a greatest-of-all-time list, classic first album or not.
