Frozen in Carbonite Presents — Song of the Summer x Video Part of the Summer 2017: The Summer of Angst

Words by Frozen in Carbonite

I turned 40 this summer. Eschewing a crazy-ass party, trip or any other type of midlife crisis-type behavior, I kept it mellow and went out to my local™ bar. Street skating over forty is unknown territory, but if you manage to stay fit, there’s what I call the Reggie Miller Effect: one’s physique remains essentially static, but one’s capabilities — whether because of reflexes or vision deteriorating — decline exponentially. It’s all about managing expectations. 360 flips might flip slower than in the past, but maybe one adds backside nosegrind reverts on small ledges to the repertoire. Other summer activities function in a similar manner; one might not be able to make it to OVO Fest, but maybe one could chill at one of those tiny New York hotel pools with a bag of tequila taped to one’s thigh.

This #frame gives one hope heading into the fall A.K.A. skate season. Indeed, while this may be the first S.O.T.S. x V.P.O.T.S. post without a part from an according-to-Hoyle physical release, at press time, we were still digesting the 917 and Traffic vids, plus anticipating the release of Sabotage 5. So with an eye towards hoody season, let’s take a look back at the songs and video parts that fueled summer ’17.

Check out the new commercial Genesis Evans and Conor Prunty’s brand, Humble! Then show some support for friends doing cool stuff!

Best video of 2017? Scumco and Sons has a new one featuring Kyle fucking Nicholson and Philly Santosuosso. The overall spirit of the Pittsburgh skate scene is one of the most admirable, inspiring and make-you-feel-stupid-for-complaining-about-literally-anything forces in skateboarding. God bless everyone involved. Really predictable #1 for this week’s QS Top 10 as well.

C H A D M U S K A E P I C L Y L A T E R ‘ D H O L Y S H I T. Our prayers have been answered! The upcoming season also includes episodes for Andrew Reynolds, Bam (!!!), Heath Kirchart, Jason Dill, Andy Roy and Spike Jonze.

#TF[west]Report, August 19, 2017, but I’d teleport to Republiqué if given the chance :)

Another week, another iconic Nik Stain backside smith grind line ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The last #fit anyone expected to see in a 2017 skate clip (a Jeremy Lin jersey), and some subversive line choreography at the Pratt brick bank ledge. Drew Connors uploaded his longest promo yet for Bailar II, which has apparently been completed.

Boil the Ocean has suggestions for Wenning, Lakai and Clint “Worst Style” Walker.

Bronze affiliates and QS office favorites, Mark Humienik and Josh Wilson, visited the under-explored city of Istanbul and came back with this edit.

Steve Mastorelli uploaded his Jersey (duh) based Meadowlands video in full.

Here’s “Mean Streets” volume 9 via LurkNYC, but you gotta #respect Paul Tucci.

A ten-minute remix of Andrew Allen footage + some cameos from Vans guys.

Stuff you’ve seen already1) Palace dropped a new, 14-minute video that includes a small intro part for Lucas at the end. Dej is sick but he should’ve skated to Cardi B. 2) The boys behind Hjalte Halberg’s favorite non-Swedish skateboard company went to Brazil and came back with the feel-good motion picture of the summer. My new favorite skateboard-writer, Jesse Alba, also wrote the article about their trip to Russia with accompanying photos by Colin Sussingham.

“Your Honor, totally he is guilty and in no way can I let him slide out of anything because — it’s my attitude toward his entire demeanor, what he has done to people. And he disrespected the Wu-Tang Clan.”

Quote of the Week:

Not a late one today!

yg flameboy

Rappers aren’t known for getting particularly well thought-out tattoos, but we’re still having a tough time coming to terms with YG’s Flameboy tattoo. Apparently he tried to skate at one point in time? Anyway, who else has been catching themselves mumbling “You know I buy you that Chanel, right?”

Reynolds.

The Supreme video, “cherry,” will be available on DVD this Thursday, March 20th. iTunes March 27th. Blue Is the Warmest Color is available on Netflix instant right now.

Yet another “New York Times” raw footage reel from the LurkNYC crew. It’s chill that they skate around with an Oriris G-Bag. Wish we had one :(

Pittsburgh’s Scumco and Sons has a new montage out. Philly Santosuosso has a good bit of New York footage in it. His tricks on the concrete nipple at the park across from Joe’s Pizza are tight. Also features Zach Funk and Lucas Erlebach.

Everyone please welcome Buzzfeed to the list of insitutions writing about New York skateboarding. (Do we make a truer-to-life, R-rated version of their #listicle?)

Charlie Samuels tells the story behind the lil’ Harold Hunter Times Square wallie photo that Supreme utilized for their Comme des Garcons collaboration. However, Buzzfeed is right, this might be the best Harold Hunter photo.

Always nice to see Jeff Pang on a skateboard. No Keith Nut though?

The bowl-to-bank ollie at House of Vans is at the end of this clip. Wow.

Taji put together a “Winter Thaw” clip for Acapulco Gold. More Leo Gutman sightings.

Jordan Hoffart did the most insane kickflip ever (Smolik was probably hyped on it) and Ben Raybourn did a natural loop.

A QS reader made a Soundcloud playlist of songs from our videos. It looks even more like a Friday night Hot 97 mix show playlist than previously expected. He found a nice edit of the Leon Ware song from our only California clip ever.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Yeah, Blazers-Warriors shouldn’t be nationally televised or anything…(*Fingers crossed for Clippers-Warriors first round series*)

Quote of the Week: “You just have to treat being friends with Pryce like dating a hot chick.” — Torey Goodall

R.I.P. Speaker Knockerz. “Rico looked down, had to check his phone, Pedro came out, bang, Rico’s gone…'”

cyrus back smith

Cyrus Bennett — Back Smith at Battery Park, as seen in Looney Bin. Photo via Colin Sussingham, who’s been posting a lot of awesome photos on his Tumblr as of late. It has been online since Thursday night, but Looney Bin is really solid. Best LurkNYC video yet. Every Cyrus part gets better, the homie Adam Zhu has chill tricks, and that dude Jason Byoun’s part is great. If you’re still not at terms with Drake, you could probably find solace in the music there too.

Someone compiled a more official Jordan-inspired skate shoe rundown than our rinky dink Jordan at 50 post from February.

A #listicle of the ten most iconic New York City skaters.

The Theories of Atlantis site has DVDs of The Brodies for sale. It’s $25, but includes the past three Elkin vids, fancy packaging and a photo book. The video has gotten more replay than pretty much anything else from the past few months (A.K.A. anything else since Beef Patty and Solo Jazz.) Good to see not-neccesarily-pro New York skaters in their thirties still killing it. Also, Ishod is one of the best but Leo Gutman won S.O.T.Y. on QS.

The dudes behind Film Me and Goin’ Ham have a new video called Off the Braxx premiering online tomorrow. You can check the new teaser here.

Conor Fay’s part in Seasons Skateshop’s Capital Distruct video is chill.

Lurkers 3 coming soon.

More cool stuff out of Pittsburgh: Cody Baker’s part in While Yinz Were Sleeping and part two of the mini doc about Scumco and Sons.

Old war footage motifs (?) and some not-oft-seen spots in this New Jersey edit.

A bro cam edit with a topical title: “The Knicks Suck.”

The Hahafuntime crew relaunched their website.

If you’re fortunate enough to live in a city where Santacon doesn’t happen, you’re missing out on stuff like this and observations like this one.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Is there a more fun-to-watch team than the Warriors right now? What the hell was Jose Calderon doing when Steph Curry hit this?

Quote of the Week
Skate Nerd in his 30s:Ishod’s appeal doesn’t span to me.”
Skate Nerd in his 20s: “That’s because you don’t like any skaters under thirty.”
Skate Nerd in his 30s: “I like Lenny Rivas.”

Thanks to anyone who linked our Best of 2013 clip. Here’s a .GIF of the ender:

Cheer up, it’s supposed to be 50 degrees on Friday :)

max ollie

Max Palmer A.K.A. Loose Trucks Max — Bar Ollie via The Local Weather

The no comply into slide game is getting mad real, huh?

Chief Keith, one of the QS office’s favorite skateboarders, now rides for Hopps.

Quim Cardona reveals that he was originally supposed to play Telly in Kids, and then skates around Brooklyn and Manhattan in this “Asphalt NYC” clip.

Gino, Kenny, Koston, Stefan and Zered doing skateboard tricks in New York for fifty-four seconds. Gino even pushes in it!

The Alex Olson picnic table .GIF round-up.

Two of these things are skateable. Get on it, IBM.

Take a trip back to New Jersey and Philadelphia in 2005-2008, and realize just how long Brian Wenning’s impact on fashion in the region hung around for.

Some of the sickest-looking skateboarding continues to come out of Pittsburgh.

Is house music in bro cam clips featuring mostly skaters who are 25+ going to turn into a “thing?” and the new Diamond Days clip might technically be more #street than the one that was supposed to be their return to the streets, provided we are still treating Fat Kid Spot as a #street spot.

Snack Skateboards (no affiliation obvs) comes through with one of the better “Summer Trip to NYC” web clips to come out this year.

Boil the Ocean makes the case for the frontside noseslide being the most “picture-esque” of slide tricks, via a recent example by Brian Clarke. Though not a slide, we’re partial to the frontside noseslide’s cousin, the backside 180 nosegrind.

Kukunochi Corp. has some scans of a Swedish magazine article about Polar’s 2012 trip to New York. Lots of cool photos, though no English translation.

Sigh: Part Two.

QS Sports Desk Headline of the Week: Iman Thug shaved his flattop off. End of an era. (Does anyone else have a horrible feeling that Dolan is going to force some moronic trade that involves Iman this season?)

[Anonymous] Quote of the Week:
“Yo ____, can I borrow $5?”
“I’m an illegal immigrant with no job. I’m the last person in this car you should be asking for money.”

Thanks to everyone who linked up the Brad Cromer remix. Have a good week.
