That Summer Flip Cam Wave

Threw together a bunch of cutty Flip Cam and iPhone clips that have been laying around since the end of winter, plus footage of some more recent outings. 2011 might have the worst (best?) ratio of rap songs to non-rap songs as far as music selection in Quartersnacks clips goes. So far, there has been one clip (not counting Justin White’s contribution) where the soundtrack hasn’t dealt with cars, making it rain, pimping, ice cream, inquires to “how ya do that there,” or RACKS. We’ll try our best to acknowledge another genre of music to edit skate clips to in the near future. Have a good weekend.

SUMMER 2011

Frozen in Carbonite posted up a journalistic masterwork dealing with the correlations between early-to-mid-90s backpack rap and skate videos. It’s a long read by skateboard writing standards, but a must for rap nerd skateboarders. “The vibe at the time was that anyone who could noseslide a handrail and/or kickflip backside tailslide a shin-high ledge could get hooked up. Similarly, dudes back then scored record deals off one verse (AZ and Cappadonna, off the top of my head).”

Things that will never become irrelevant in skate footage: Big L songs and olling onto car hoods.

Billy McFeely has a high affinity for skateboarding in water. He might be a surfer trapped inside a skateboarder’s body. Or is merely trying to establish a new water sport off-shoot within the skateboard industry. Who said you couldn’t skate Flushing when the fountains were on? (For reference: Last year’s Tompkins rain clip.)

Someone followed suit with our request insisting that people on the internet should write some words about Trilogy. The Reskue Blog has a brief write-up, explaining things like the origin of “the ghetto bird.” Can someone explain why the British love Menace/mid-90s Dwindle so much? Or is that akin to asking why Japanese people love mid-90s New York so much?

There is a Girl demo on Friday, July 1st at 12th & A. Mike Carroll & Rick Howard will be present, so it’s a demo that even grown-ups will attend. Rumors of a special guest appearance by Alex Olson are running rampant.

The people have spoken…If New York skaters could have one skate spot no longer with us returned, it would be the Small Banks with 31% of the vote, just barely trailed by BAM with 28%. People weren’t as nostalgic for Bench Down Curb. If you’re wondering why places like the ledges across from the Bronx Courthouse, Ikea, and Ziegfield were left out, it’s because we chose places that haven’t been around for a minimum of five years.

Words of Wisdom from the aforementioned Carbonite article: “Pulling out some obscure Pete Rock remix is cool n’ shit, and we may derive some kind of existential meaning from it. At the end of the day, though, this particular brand of hip-hop monasticism (or obscure skate video music supervision knowledge) is irrelevant—especially if any form of expert knowledge is accessible to anyone on the planet. If you aren’t making bitches get loose, you really aren’t doing shit.”

K.T. & B.D. in The Skateboard Mag #88

As revealed in the latest issue of The Skateboard Mag, Dave Willis and Kevin Tierney are officially ams for Zoo York.

Both of them have sick photos (and hopefully new video parts to accompany them in the near future), but the supporting text fails to capture their finer moments beyond Kevin’s tardiness, and Dave’s ability to skate without rest for hours upon end. A sensible alternative would have been a discussion of how traumatized Kevin is from the time Bradley threw the crutch at him and Taji, or his expertise in low-cost wineries. B.D. is also also a man with no shortage of great stories, and memorable, yet infrequent, Twitter activity. The Skateboard Mag also neglected to provide him with the proper space for a Waka Flocka shout out, which is unfortunate. (DuFlockaRant out now.)

Below is Kevin ripping around Midtown, doing New York stuff (long 5050s, switch front shoves, etc.) in the past Quartersnacks Christmas clip. We don’t have an extensive B.D. archive, but you can watch him in last year’s Zoo York promo. In 2011, they’re both much better at skateboarding than either of these two videos tend to indicate.

Is this the greatest shirt to ever be featured in a Quartersnacks clip?

This was originally supposed to go online yesterday, but after falling into deep depression at around the 11:15 P.M. mark of a certain sporting event on Thursday night, Friday wasn’t the productive day the Quartersnacks office had envisioned. (To any Chicago readers: Has Scottie Pippen been temporarily banned from the city yet?) But life (barely) goes on, and enough emotional strength was gathered to put together our traditional beginning of summer / Memorial Day weekend montage. It features plenty of diamond plated ledges, long 5050s, a lot of 180s (both backside and frontside), a No Limit classic alongside its respective eastern remix, and even a Brengar cameo.

P.P.S. Young Jeezy has a new mixtape out for Memorial Day weekend. Normally, this would get its own, dedicated post treatment, but he has been spending the past year recording Rick Ross bites (things have really changed, huh), so expectations for it aren’t as high as they were in the pre-Lex Luger/Fake Lex Luger beat and celebrity name as a hook era.

Weekend Viewing: Live From Summer 2006

Over the past four and a half years, Gigliotti has been worrying about a lost line he had filmed in the latter portion of summer 2006. It was a noseslide on a high ledge, followed by a bunch of flatground tricks in the middle of a stylish SoHo street. Despite whatever style points Michael had acquired for this late-night maneuver, he feared he may never see his line, for it was believed to be lost on a DV tape thrown in storage somewhere. The spot on which he filmed this trick was problematic, due to the fact that you had to wait until 3 or 4 A.M. for the restaurant / bar to close before you can skate it, so merely re-filming it was not the easiest of options. Michael kept devising plans to bribe Sam for access to his stored tapes, to little avail. He feared the cause may be lost. But then came today.

This is a clip filmed and edited by Sam Salganik, with most of the footage originating from late summer 2006 throughout the remainder of the year. Pretty much when everyone was a lot more productive on the skateboarding end of things, and Ben was frontside flipping the Wall Street Gap in two tries with like three feet of extra space after the gap. (Some of the footage appeared in this clip from January ’07.) Features Kevin Tierney when he was a few inches shorter and wearing his world renown Corn Pops tee shirt, Matthew Mooney, Pryce Holmes, Ty Lyons, Isak Buan, Taji Ameen, Leo Gutman, and of course, Michael Gigliotti.
