Four Billion Skaters

Unsolicited reminder for everybody to get reacquainted with the story of Fred Gall saving the Cambodian monks from a burning building. Shit deserves a 30 For 30.

Tristan Mershon, creator of the Fool’s Gold video from this past May, has a quick new check-in edit called “Almost There.” First time that garage on Crosby and Houston has popped up in an edit for a while ;) Classic spot from simpler times.

“We doin’ shit! We’ve always been doing shit, only now it’s being recognized.” Skateism has a very sick interview with Jaime Reyes.

Peepin Out The Window

Caleb’s pro! Photo via Genesis Evans. Caleb’s Bunt (from February 2020) is really good, btw.

“Couple manuals, couple flatground.” Imagine skating for 34 years and still being this fucking good. Pocket‘s latest “Followed” episode is with the goat Daniel Lebron. They really got the pacing of life thing figured out in Spain. Big love to the Mexican families in L.A. ♥

The Duplex dudes out of Florida have low-key been putting out some of the best independently-released, no media-outlet-backed videos of 2021. “Five-Six-One,” their latest, is absolutely no exception. That Leap of Faith clip over the lady is so wild, plus Jake Sanso goes off like usual. Peep their earlier releases: “Sk8 Wing” from May + “Duplex 2” from January.

Big Parts Unknown vibes in this: Pocket‘s latest installment of its “Followed” / day-in-the-life-esque series trails the samosa vendor from MACBA for a day. This entire piece is so so good, and really shines a light on how essential these peripheral figures at spots are to skate culture. Can’t wait for more. Shout out the the Flushing empanada lady. Shout out to the Brooklyn Banks Burger King, the Love Park Wawa, at al.

Week late, but on the slim chance that you haven’t seen Tristan Mershon’s Fool’s Gold video, filmed in predominantly non-obvious corners of New York, please do. The last two parts are especially incredible, and the curtain-call filming is brilliant. “What’s your spot-finding method?” “Lurking, really.”

Hot Potato” is the new edit from Stephan Singh with a lot of gems it (that backside flip!)

The Wolf of Prince Street

Cyrus really elevated the bar on tricks that utilize the re-built fountain ground at Flushing in his new HUF commercial. Wow.

Enjoyed this quick Jasper Stieve part from Venture and NJ Skateshop. (You should rewatch his Sportsmanshit section, btw.)

Lots of interviews this week…

“[The spot has] got to have some element that makes it weathered, so not everybody wants to skate it. But the people who do want to skate it really want to skate it.” John Gardner’s discusses presidential aspirations with Fred Gall as his V.P. in his interview from the June issue of Thrasher, which is now online.

Snack Language

Congratulations to John Gardner on the pro board ♥ There are few skaters as contagiously fun to watch as John, and if getting people hyped to skate is the principal purpose of why we have pro skateboarders to begin with, John should’ve been pro ages ago :) Creature dropped a remix of his footy from the past few years to illustrate that exact point. Can’t think of a recent skate commercial that was this good. Philly Santosuosso and a friend pay homage to Spike and Mike’s “Is it the shoes?” Jordan ad on the occasion of Philly’s new Venture truck. The execution is just so, so good, right down to every little detail. Give everyone involved a raise.
