Where were you during the poncho craze of ’84?

Nothing happens in August. There are even guides on how to look busy at work in August. The same applies for skate media. You’ll have to pardon some of the inclusions if they are not of the “breaking news” variety…

…and if you need something to do, please consult this MegaUpload link. It’s a 650MB .mpg file containing the first three FTC videos. Completely forgot that “Best Rap Song Ever” shortlist contender, “I Am I Be” has been used in a skate part before. (Quick links to relevant FTC New York sections: “Live From New York,” “Family Affair,” some guy named Keith Hufnagel.)

Vote for NJ Skateshop in Vans and Spitfire’s D.I.Y. spot/shop video contest. They’re the only east coast shop up there. And it’s the first skate video to channel narrative motifs from The Sopranos.

NYU: 0, Skateboarding: 1. Now a few more of those need to come off… (Related: Stop applying to NYU, and stop supporting hate crimes.)

Sick video of some Green Diamond affiliates doing noteworthy slappy crooked grinds and performing under-used maneuvers like frontside noseslides to fakie. “This is mad white…but also sick.” — Roctakon.

Eli Reed looking for a manual pad in New York in hopes of retaining his Manny Mania title. Best thing to be on The Berrics since the Mike Vallely Battle Commander.

Web comment of the Year, via the Hella Clips page for the official DQM/Girl/Lakai demo video, which is nowhere near as good as the “I’m thirsty nigga, Imma fuck you up man” clip.

Nolan Lee skating a sketchy-looking handicap ramp rail.

R.I.P. éS Footwear. Though not as heavily romanticized as the Koston 1s and 2s, the 3s were big in New York back in 2001-2002. In further influence, Menik Mati was pretty much the Jaws of skate videos, in that it provided the blueprint for blockbuster skate video productions for over ten years, a format that is only now beginning to wane. Here is Boil the Ocean on that same subject (#25.)

Quote of the Week:
45-Year-Old Man Wearing a Du-Rag: “Aren’t you too old to be skateboarding?
22-Year-Old Josh Velez: “Aren’t you too old to be wearing shants? There are pants and there are shorts. Pick one.

DQM + HD + GD

Great forecast, right?

Usually, this time of year coincides with an onslaught of clips filmed by varying ensembles of derelicts flying out here for July and August, so they could consume beer, rekindle last summer’s flames from lonely Greenpoint café waitresses working on getting buyers for their jewelry lines, and film a few lines and single tricks at the newest abomination of what we consider to be a popular skate spot. Well, you can stop the searching, because this is far and away the funnest and most well done “Summer in New York” clip that you’ll see.

Rob Harris threw this thing together for DQM, but it almost has the vibe of a GD end of summer clip, just without Yaje since he’s busy drinking espressos on private jets with Costa Rican strippers while occasionally taking time out of his schedule to film earth-shattering maneuvers on the city streets. (Does Kyle still skate or did he bow out on his magical video part and stop taking acupuncture treatments?) A wonderful way to pass by the next day while waiting for the weather to clear up.

That spot at 2:20 seems like the worst spot on the face of the earth. How that dude did a backside 180 5-0 on it is incredible.

Features Brian Delatorre, Pat Cook, Curtis Rapp, Dan Forkin, Ben Bartele, and Carter Donnell. Rob Harris for DQM.

Green Diamond Digi-Cam clip featuring top 5 skateboarder, top 3 video part holder of all time, Torey Goodall.

The most frustrating thing you could ever watch if you know what getting kicked out of a spot is like.

By the way… Alien video is set for February 6th, 2009.

Bosco painted this thing at the contest this past Saturday, which I unfortunately was not able to get Taji to re-cap. I guess I’ll never know who on 5Boro won.

Rob Harris put together this throw away clip for the >Rich Mahogany video which is supposed to come out in Fall 2007 Spring 2008 Fall of this year.

Many years ago, before Switch Mike perfected the artistry of nollie bigflips, he was telling his moms to “Chill wit dat” in music videos for early-1990s B-list rappers.

I have no reason for posting this whatsoever, but this montage from FTC 3 has always been a favorite, and best of all, features the song Danny Weiss was supposed to skate to in my video back in 2004 before he decided he had a better knack for picking out outfits and taking pictures of random people on the street. You know how frontside heelflips typically are ridiculously difficult to do well? The J.B. Gillet one over the jersey barrier in this clip is the best non-Kalis flip trick in skateboarding history.

No more six stair ledge where the rail was cut off at FedEx anymore.

Vintage Danny Supa part from the Treefort video. (Where do you think that name ranks on the worst-skate-company-name-ever list?)
