Best Piña Colada in Newark

The game of S.K.A.T.E. everybody has been waiting for. Nah, it’s not B.A.T.B. — it’s Turtle v.s. Rohan via Masterplan.

Beloved by few, hated by more, tolerated by the majority. The Corlears Hook Pedestrian Bridge — better known to us as the home of Alligator Ledge — was just demolished last week, following suit with the East River Park Amphitheater. Pretty sure that the last sighting of it in footage was Trung Nguyen’s section in Melodi’s “Sparks” video. Tough break for the same week they started knobbing city curbs.

Add sugarcanes on curbs to the #trendwatch.

Joe Cups uploaded a snapshot of skateboarding in New York in 1999: the original BAM, the World Trade manny pad, the mini Banks rail, trips to Casino Skatepark, and obvs Andre Page.

Kevin DuFlockaRant V.S. Lebron Flocka James

We’re on the cusp of possibly living in a world where Eddy Curry has an NBA championship ring. No justice. Anyway, DuFlockaRant is a way better mixtape than any of the Lebron Flocka James tapes, so you know who we’re going for…

“I found a bucket and I put it on my head because stuff was falling all over the place,” Gall continues, “and I’m screaming, ‘Where’s the women and children?’ But there are no women and children because it’s a monk monastery. I was just in hero mode — just trying to save lives, dude.” A story about Fred Gall saving a bunch of Cambodian monks from a fire. Jaws wouldn’t do that, he’d just ollie off the building. Vote Freddy.

Here’s a glimpse of a fairly underexposed skate scene: Capetown, South Africa (there might be some U.K. footage in there though.) A lack of a Tompkins Square Park withstanding, their spots don’t look much different from the ones in the northeastern United States.

While we’re on the topic of Africa, these dudes are way gnarlier than any skater on the planet (except maybe Fred Gall.)

G-Shock did a commercial segment with QS-homie Rafael “Haffa” Pereira. The “How do you dress?” question was first answered with “Man, I don’t fucking know,” before resorting to a more diplomatic (and hilarious) answer of “The way I dress is urban.”

Jonathan Mehring with some recent photos of Kevin Tierney, Luis Tolentino, Jake Johnson, and others over on the Skateboarder site.

A “Day in the Life” video of sorts with Zered Bassett and Kevin Tierney skating around downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn. Doc Holiday’s being “the best place in the world” is highly debatable.

Be careful if you take that trip down to Philly this summer.

That thin concrete ledge a few blocks south of the Tribeca Skatepark got sandblasted. Free meal at the neighboring Shake Shack for the first person to re-wax it.

Quote of the Week
Pad: “Yeah, I don’t do really do brunch anymore, but went to this spot in the West Village today. It wasn’t that good and way too expensive.”
Roctakon: “Sounds like the West Village. Also sounds like brunch.”

After you’re done revisiting DuFlockaRant (MILLIONAIRE EATING RAMEN NOODLES), check out this Mecca & the Soul Brother tribute mix, done in honor of the album turning 20 this past weekend.

Cash Only Popeye’s

Click to enlarge. The scan is from the extensive Gino Iannucci archive over at the Chrome Ball Incident. The other day, we were talking about how great it’d be if the Javitz Center was still around. New York could definitely use another empty park with a bunch of three-sets, some mellow ledges, and no bust factor.

Some people pointed out a few omissions from last Friday’s rap video skate part post, namely Quim Cardona from Eastern Exposure 3 (which wasn’t an actual part), Joey Suriel from Street Cinema (only an intro, but his choice of rapping over a Beanie Sigel and Rick Rock collaboration is quite admirable), and some obscure Dave Mayhew part mentioned in the comments. However, Dave Mayhew has already accomplished enough in skateboarding by reinventing the way mankind perceived footwear with the D3, and pre-dating Carroll’s popularization of doing impossibles out of things with his Storm part.

Also regarding the aforementioned article, the Black Ninja co-signed his inclusion. He is certainly the best rapper of the bunch, and at this point, probably the only skater who should be rapping to his part (although the bar is pretty high for his next outing.)

Did you know that Chad Fernandez has a twin brother who’s a UFC fighter? (Via Eby)

It’s no secret that the C-Benches are a D-list downtown spot (actually, there are no A-list downtown spots, so maybe that bumps it up to a C-list downtown spot), but on the slim chance that you have been itching to skate there, the whole plaza is under construction for now. It looks like they’re not touching the benches, and only replacing the floor, which would be a good thing. Unless it’s clunkier than the current floor.

Well, this was certainly expected.

Diamond Days #49. Word is that they’re going to do a special GOLD edition for #50 with a big Steve Berra 5050 like 411 did for their 50th edition. Features footage of Corey Rubin AKA Corey from Finland, and a very impressive maneuver on three-up three-down.

Quartersnacks International Links: Butter Goods promo out of Perth, Australia (that low metal ledge spot on perfect ground from Full Flared, etc. looks like the funnest place on earth), and a Familia Skateboards promo from South Africa. Always cool when people from all over the globe shoot over links to such a local, inside-joke-filled New York site.
