Five in the Morning Going Hard in the Kitchen

Congratulations to Liz and Miles on the birth of the first QS-affiliated baby!

Turns out that Ben Colen’s wishful Chromeball visits amounted to an after-credits bonus interview with Jovontae Turner, where he talks about racists and other things.

Gino Iannucci pays a visit to the Roslyn Banks, probably the most recognizable Long Island skate spot, which is sort of sad for such a large land mass. He discusses the spot’s history and offers a #controversial opinion against the use of Bondo.

Muckmouth compiled an extensive video of all the tricks that have been done on the Santa Monica Courthouse stage. And yeah, a nollie heelflip up is still absurd.

A bunch of Colorado expats living in New York made cool a ten-minute video. Weed humor tends to go over much of the QS office’s heads, but they share our spot sensibilities. Also, is that Cameron Diaz’s character from The Counselor at 3:17?

After Midnight New York’s fall/winter team montage.

Whoa, Miley Cyrus rips on a skateboard.

Jeremy Elkin’s new video somehow managed to round up and feature four dudes who pretty much everyone has always wanted to see full parts from: Akira Mowatt (unless you count Mixtape 2), Rob Campbell, German Nieves, and Leo Gutman (he had a part in Flipmode 3, but that was in 2006…) The Brodies premieres at Sunshine Theater on Thursday, November 14th at 9 P.M. Flyer here.

The Brimley crew from out in Arizona offers their “Summer Trip to NY” entry.

“I talked to Matt Price and he had never even seen that photo of Keith Hufnagel before.”

Anthony Pappalardo (the writer, not the Alien Workshop/Chocolate alumnus) wrote a .GIF-enhanced #listicle about extinct skateboard tricks for Complex. The “Muska Flip” or non-flipping-frontside-flip portion fails to acknowledge the plight of those of us who learned hardflips before frontside flips, and thus have a muscle memory that is averse to kickflipping for a frontside flip. We did not choose Muska flips and we’re not named Bryan Herman, so we’re stuck with hardflip frontside body varials. Anyone who was ever capable of flipping a frontside flip, but chose not to because they thought it looked cool is just stupid. We were born this way! Stop mocking our handicap!

(Also, still celebrating Halloween on November 1st or 2nd needs to stop. It’s the fall equivalent of saying “Happy New Year” in March.)

All sticker packs shipped on Friday night. If you don’t receive something this week, chances are, you missed the cut-off for the first hundred addresses. If you sent an e-mail before 11:30 A.M. (E.S.T.), you should be getting something this week ;)

We’ve been fans of Christian Willis’ skating for a while now. After what seems like a bit of a hiatus, he’s back taller and with a sick new video part. Why a legitimate company hasn’t given this kid a chance is absurd. Him and Forrest Edwards should be getting checks for skating.

As you may already know, London’s Southbank is facing an uncertain future. There’s a new six-minute montage paying tribute to the spot, featuring every London-based skater you can think of. Huck wrote a somewhat level-headed appraisal of the situation, which doesn’t seem likely to favor preservation of the spot as it stands. But it’s a bit stupid to say “The British skate media is secretly tired of Southbank’s status as the UK’s EMB,” considering skate spots with multi-decade spanning histories are becoming increasingly rare with each passing year.

The inaugural entry to 2013’s “Summer Trip to New York” cycle?! Part 1, Part 2.

AM New York has a new clip with Ariel Perl shredding around Boston and New York.

Ripped Laces contends that Austyn Gillette will inevitably skate for Converse.

Zered Bassett already rides for Converse and has some photos with a new interview about a recent Cons Hawaii trip over on the Transworld site.

The new LurkNYC video, CCTV, is premiering at 44 Troutman Street in Brooklyn this Saturday, May 18. J train to Myrtle-Broadway. 10 P.M. Flyer here, teaser here.

Still mad street.

There’s another part from Mama’s Boys on YouTube now.

An interview with the Mira Conyo crew about skateboarding in Washington Heights.

QS Sports Desk Play of the Week: Either Iman Thug’s Game 2 putback or Nate Robinson’s block on Lebron.

Didn’t Mark Suciu film more parts last year than Rogers did in his entire career?

Cam rapped over the Golden Girls theme and the new Waka mixtape is pretty good because it doesn’t sound like every other tape he released in the past three years.

Shit Skateboarders Say

Sweet Waste in the world’s greatest tee shirt, and Lil’ Wayne dressed like a 12-year-old girl who just used her $100 Hot Topic gift card from Christmas at the Monmouth Mall. The Wayne coverage on QS has come full circle.

Akira Mowatt’s company, After Midnight New York, just dropped a team montage. The illustrious Geo Moya has the intro honors, so it’s a must-watch.

Portland, Maine isn’t exactly the first (or fifth…or tenth…) city you think of when it comes to skateboarding in the northeast. ’96 Mentality is a new mini-video out of Portland that gives a glimpse into their scene. It’s super well-edited, and the tricks and vibe give it a nineties feel, even though it’s all HD.

Here is the final throwaway clip from the PFP2 video, based out of that region just north of New York City and sponsored by 2nd Nature. You can watch the full first video here. P.S. “Get It On Tonite” is the far superior Montell Jordan single.

It’s sick that outer-borough (Brooklyn) kids can make a ten-minute video, all filmed in New York, but with barely any recognizable spots in it. Just goes to show you how big this city is. Watch the Slime video here. Also, this means the turnaround on someone skating to song off Rich Forever was what, one week?

Want to re-live Tompkins circa 2004? Watch this Super-8 reel. Some of it might look familiar because it was used in Lurkers 2.

Taji, Leo, Billy Rohan, and No Pants Day. Surprising that it has taken this long for someone to skate that fountain gap in front of the 42nd Street Library.

Rob Harris shares his of-the-moment jams on the DQM site. Travie, 2Chainz, Future, and a bunch of other stuff we’ve never heard of (Elvis?) is on there.

There’s not much to say about the Mark Suciu part that hasn’t already been said. (It’s scary that switch backside noseblunts down handrails just get quickly tossed in the middle of parts nowadays though.) Frozen in Carbonite makes an interesting observation though — Is everyone going to forget about it in two days? Is that really the shelf-life of a web video part these days? Do people still talk about the Dylan Reider Gravis part, the Lucas Puig TWS video, or the Torey Pudwill part from the summer?

Quote of the Week: “Autumn is fucking closed and assholes are taking pictures on iPads, the future sucks.” — Francesco Pini, Chief Officer of QS International’s Italian and Scandinavian Branches

Ok, time to watch the Knicks fall behind by thirty points in the first half, and then switch the channel to the Memphis/Chicago game. Stay warm out there. Later.

Morning Edition

To everyone’s disappointment, the following video clip does not contain footage of Geo Moya landing the above trick. More importantly, did you wish Moya happy birthday yesterday?

Below is a clip we put together featuring the team from Akira Mowatt’s company, After Midnight New York — not to be confused with the free newspapers. It has a high concentration of hood legends, in addition to music supervision from the era when Harlem ruled the summer (AKA before the Ed Hardy tees.) Features Quim Cardona, Joseph Delgado, Geo Moya, Charles Lamb, John Wisdom, Leo Heinert, Rob Campbell, Akira Mowatt, Masashi Shiroma, Dakota Segree, and Ariel Perl.

Filmed by Gosh Goto.

Best west coast noseslide is Muska. Best east coast noseslide is Moya. Best half cab noseslide is also Moya.” — The Worst Dude These Days

Support your local bodega. According to a recent New York real estate report, the city is facing a wave of bodega closures. That most likely has to do with every available retail space in New York turning into a Duane Reade that charges you $2.30 for a twenty-ounce soda. When all the bodegas close down, so will this website. Stop supporting Duane Reade.

Congratulations to Dennis Busentiz for winning Tampa Pro. One of the top five active skateboarders today. Speed is everything. The Real video couldn’t come out any sooner. Watch The Road to the Real Video here.

Here’s a Miles Marquez mini-part / promo that Quartersnacks put together for Akira Mowatt’s clothing company, After Midnight New York. It’s probably the third time in the past few months that you have seen the switch heel over the Mercer Street gap and the Prince Street quick set-up planter ollie. In other words, it’s all recycled footage.

An interview with Ian Reid about Streets is Watching, his long-delayed follow up to Sex, Hood, Skate & Videotape from 2006. You can watch the three-year-old teaser to the video here.

These Video Days sits down for an interview with Bill Strobeck, to discuss creative processes, inspirations, and other things that will probably make you ball up in joy if you go to film school, or something. 48 Blocks also ran an interview with Bill a while back that goes more in depth regarding skateboard video history and whatnot, so read that if you missed it.

The Parks Department bolted a bench down in front of the main, concreted-over bank at the Chinatown Banks. Thankfully, there is no reason to ever go there again. Someone will probably thread the needle and back lip between past the bench though. Thanks to Sam for the tip.

Haven’t been to Brooklyn in 2011 yet, but a few people have said that the 11th and Wythe Street ledge down the block from KCDC is done for. Can anybody confirm? Is this a conspiracy involving Tyler Bledsoe, the Secret Service, and the Parks Department? Did he destroy it after “making it popular?” Why does a spot become “popular” only after it appears in a Transworld video? There are many questions to be answered with this untimely demise.
