Spots: Queens — Corona, Elmhurst & Rego Park
Spot: This overpass turned into a sought-after spot in light of the Flipmode Squad’s popularization of this large-scale health hazard on the skateboarders of New York City (the spot is kind of like a shitty, Queens-ized version of the Courthouse Drop.)
It is a three foot drop that you approach from a slab of concrete that separates the two lanes of the Long Island Expressway / 495 / I-95 Auxiliary Route (only in New York do you approach a gap in the middle of interstate traffic.) Once you make it down the drop, you need to ride down into a forty-foot long hill, into two-lane traffic. If you are smart, you will have somebody signal to you when the light is red. Or have a walkie-talkie for the session.
If that does not interest you, there is a highway divider with a banked edge which slowly ascends. Just like the gap itself, you need to watch out for parallel traffic, and will be stuck waiting for red lights more of the time. There’s also a makeshift concrete quarterpipe just behind it, with a concrete lip.
Bust — ♦ / Rare: You’ll probably get hit by a bus before you get kicked out of here.
Location: Queens Boulevard, under the Long Island Expressway overpass in Rego Park. Take the R or V to Woodhaven Boulevard, and skate two blocks east towards the Long Island Expressway. The spot is right underneath it.
