36th Street Double-Set

Spots: Midtown Manhattan — Gramercy, Kips Bay & Murray Hill

Spot: Jake Johnson made this spot famous. So by the transitive properties of skateboarding, if you skate it, you will become famous.

The set is a solid four-flat-five, composed out of fairly large-sized steps and a three-and-a-half-foot long piece of flat in between the steps. The runway is long enough and on smooth bricks, but the landing is only about fifteen feet long before you crash into a set of benches. Also, at the top of the steps, in front of the deli (it might be closed down now, but it was overpriced anyway), there’s a five set, if you’re inclined to skate all the way to the eastside for one of those.

Bust — ♦♦♦ / Half-and-half: Assuming that a three-flat-five is not the sort of thing you want to skate for an hour (hopefully, you’ll give up in about twenty minutes and save it for another day), you should be able to get your trick. The building has security, but it usually takes them a bit of time to spot you.

Location: 36th Street and First Avenue in Kips Bay. Take the 6 train to 33rd Street. Skate east for several blocks on 33rd Street until you hit First Avenue. Make a left, and skate north for three blocks. The spot is across from Saint Vartan Park (formerly home to some of the best ledges in New York that nobody knew about), near the Queens-Midtown Tunnel.
