Stevie Williams at the Seaport — Photo by Allen Ying

Allen Ying has been taking amazing photos of New York skateboarders for a pretty long time. In the early 2000s, when any New York photo you’d see in a magazine would most likely be by Dimitry or Reda, Allen had a sick online portfolio hosted off Metrospective, providing a glance into a different side of the city, with photographs featuring a lot of the up-and-coming skaters at the time (Rodney Torres, Geo Moya, Kerel Roach, Akira, Sho Ma, Scott Schwartz, a handful of others.) Few of these early photos ended up in magazines, but I always wished I had saved more of them, along with a handful of other artifacts from the ABC Skateshop era (anyone have an extra ABC Sixers shirt?)

Allen’s work has continued to grow over the past ten years, even landing him a few well deserved cover shots. He has now he has embarked a new project entitled 43 Magazine. 43 is “a free, independent, non profit, bimonthly skateboard magazine, with a clean art book feel, dedicated to quality, photography and arts,” and titled after a forgotten name for the frontside no comply. Allen is currently looking for help on funding this project, so watch the video below for a more detailed view, and check out 43‘s Kickstarter page to pledge some money.

Waka Flocka Makes It Rain at 12th & A

July 31st, 2011 | 3:52 pm | Daily News | 5 Comments

Several days ago, the past two summers’ favorite rapper and victim of one of the largest Grammy snubs of all time, Waka Flocka, was spotted at our beloved ball court with crusty ledges. On an otherwise underwhelming day for 12th & A (the gate was locked), Waka bro-ed down with the locals and proceeded to walk across the street to Reciprocal Skate Shop and make it rain. That rain yielded a wide assortment of skate products and new boards for all those present. Luckily, there was a camera there to capture the man’s generosity. Everyone ask Billy if we could get a commemorative Waka statue or gold-plated plaque at the park in light of the occasion. It would’ve been sick if he went to Autumn, so Paulgar could’ve made it on WorldStar.

One of the few active rappers that matter in 2011. Waka supports skateboarding, so support him. Ferrari Boyz out next Tuesday, August 9th. Waka’s recent trip to New York is also significant because it revealed that Quartersnacks and Brick Squad are probably the only two institutions that hit up 12th & A and Sin City in the same day.

Originally spotted on Worldstar, but their video player sucks sometimes. So here it is on YouTube.

Barcelona Update 2 of ?: Damm Estrella Edition

July 29th, 2011 | 12:31 pm | Footage | 6 Comments

Beyond the enticing “legality” of street beers in Barcelona, which allows American tourists to maintain a mild state of intoxication at all hours, another perk is the availability of the beers themselves. New York, unlike most of the U.S., has a 24/7 window for beer purchases (barring Sundays after 4 A.M. if your local bodega happens to abide by that regulation.) However, it doesn’t have an army of Middle Eastern immigrants walking the streets and around skate spots delivering cold Damm Estrellas in exchange for 1 Euro (equivalent to $1.43 by today’s conversion rate.)

Universitat, the spot best known to the rest of the world as the three long black marble ledges on perfect ground, is sort of like Barcelona’s Union Square. The similarities are in the mixed crowd of late-teen to early-twenties lurkers blended with tourists and junkies, plus the centralized location that becomes more spacious for skateboarding as the night progresses. The comparison starts to fall apart once you account for fact that the three ledges would invariably be the best ones in all of New York, not to mention the reliably of the green-bag-carrying Estrella vendors that could be summoned by yelling out “AMIGO!”

Below is a clip featuring Josh Velez, a drunk homie at Universitat, Ty Lyons, and Andre Page. It was filmed under the discretion of street-bought Damm Estrellas. We have been trying to bolster our rap to non-rap soundtrack ratio, and it should come as no surprise that Quartersnacks has a soft spot for songs from the 1950s when it comes to video clips filmed entirely at night.

Happy Belated Thug Motivation 101 Day

July 27th, 2011 | 9:17 pm | Daily News | 4 Comments

The Quartersnacks company calendar has four important dates: The start of summer, the end of summer, Christmas, and July 26th. Unfortunately, we were not able to devise a timely post yesterday to acknowledge this most sacred of holidays, as we were busy cramming in last minute Barcelona footage. Unlike most holidays, which call for leisurely time spent with family (even the inappropriately named “Labor” Day), July 26th is a day that coincides with motivation, focus, drive, and hard work. So what we lacked in posting, we more than made up for in the acquisition of footage, so Barcelona-based updates should resume tomorrow. And let’s not even begin to dwell on how wrong this sentiment is…

Below is Alexander Mosley’s part from the first Quartersnacks video, released in December of 2006, set to the song that may quite possibly be the main reason as to why this site exists.

It wouldn’t be right if we did not post the finest, local-bred video part set to an anthem from the Only Built 4 Cuban Linx of the trap (one of the few cases throughout the history of rap music where the otherwise overused word “anthem” could be aptly applied to every song.)

Barcelona Update 1 of ?: Damm Lemon Edition

July 24th, 2011 | 10:34 am | Footage | 10 Comments

“I used to skate” on the way up to MACBA

Apparently, New York just had the hottest day since 1977. (No blackouts, right?) It’s gone above 80 degrees in Barcelona twice in the past week, so diverting your party money to a summer 2012 refuge fund might be a wise idea.

Below is a brief clip featuring Andre Page, Josh Velez, and Daniel Lebron. For those who may not know, one of the key perks of Barcelona for Americans is the legal “grey area” that exists for beer consumed on the street. Damm Lemon is one of the three key beverages (the others being Damm Estrella and water) for American travelers in the city. (Visible here along with other consumer goods unavailable to the American market, like marijuana flavored beer and Lays cheeseburger potato chips.)

We’ve only hit maybe 25% of the spots on the list, and have three days left, so hopefully there will be another quick Damm Estrella edit up in the next couple of days, in addition to a more extensive one later in the summer. Shout out to all the locals, and everyone over at Nike for looking out for us.
