Monday Afternoon Links

November 29th, 2010 | 2:40 pm | Daily News | 5 Comments

As stated in the previous post, in light of the holidays, it has been a slow news week. No WikiLeaks scandal or Dylan Reider news to keep us occupied and reporting things on a regular basis. So here is what has surfaced on the internet in recent days…

The above screen grab, featuring a young, pre-tattoo Miles Marquez and the back of Danny Weiss’ head, accompanied by the late Harold Hunter is from Again (Part one here, Part two here), a twenty-five minute long candid skateboard video made by one of the more polarizing personalities in the history of Tompkins Square Park. The cast could be roughly summarized as containing every older dude who goes in when there’s a party going on. It is disappointing that there is minimal TF footage in it though. It features a full Harold Hunter “part,” which is largely set around an improvisational way of opening a can of beef stew (the song jams too.) There’s also footage of the Muska jumping off a shipping container in a wifebeater, with black gloves and a tee shirt hanging out of his pocket. If that’s not enough for you to set aside twenty-five minutes of your afternoon, well perhaps the all-too-distant site of Danny in his more agile Jewish athlete days will do the trick. (This video, shot after he forfeited his ties in the slim ranks of Jewish athletes somehow has 2,000 views, and it makes no sense.)

This seven-minute, early-era Krooked montage from an old 411 is drastically under seen.

It’s pretty great that those Manolo Mixtape things took a turn more off the radar, as this Nate Jones one was a pleasant surprise. That dude’s Real to Reel part is on the short-list for one of the best skating/music/editing combos in the history of skateboarding (Probably my favorite song choice in a skate video of all-time, short of “Real Big” of course), but the mixtape definitely does it justice by mixing it up with some lesser seen footage, a song-choice that preserved the feel of the last one, and even commendably kept the opening bird’s eye backside 180 in the same place.

Slow News Week

November 28th, 2010 | 11:48 am | Daily News | No Comments

Were there really twenty-five? Probably not, but we are going to be generous. In light of the great critical reception we received on last year’s decade countdown list, and the fact that the internet really likes countdown lists, we’re going to give it a fair shot for the year, even though it seems like not that much has happened.

Other than that, the week has been slow due to holiday celebrations (The Dipset Reunion more so than Thanksgiving.) Either way, there are some clips on the way, another interview on the way (no, it’s not going to be as “explosive” as the Kalis one, considering there are morons Googling “Josh Kalis Grant Taylor beef” before they wind up here, which basically means skateboarders have the worst reading comprehension level imaginable), effort being put into skating for the Christmas clip, and some other things that will make December a good month, as it usually is around here.

Here’s a clip that was posted on QS around this time of year, three years ago. Probably one of the finer clips to ever be on the website, mostly due to the ending two-minute tour dé force of a certain skateboarder we have not seen enough of in recent months.

Danny Supa Big Brother Interview from May 2000

November 23rd, 2010 | 12:53 pm | Time Capsule | 2 Comments

If you pay attention to conventional skateboard media, you may be aware that Danny Supa recently signed on with BLVD Skateboards. He’s got a new commercial over there, a new interview on 48 Blocks, and hopefully an ensemble of other new things surfacing in the future. The skate media world has been sparse in Supa coverage since his Nothing but the Truth part, which featured him grinding a ledge maybe two times. When you have flip tricks like those, that’s not exactly a bad thing.

Historically speaking, like many who spent the last golden days of VHS (somewhere around 1999-2001) constantly replaying the Mixtape cassette, and treating it as an outdated tour guide to what skate spots New York City had to offer (and calling Paine Webber “the Mixtape benches” for many formidable years of skateboarding), his part from that particular video has always been a favorite. If not for the top-tier backside flips, and successful only-5050 incorporating ledge lines (switch front 5050 180 out, nollie backside 5050 bench lines, and the like), than for the part’s status as probably the only skate part to be filmed mostly in basketball shorts, some of the most comfortable skateboard attire short of Polo sweats. Until your shins get hit.

The interview below is from the August 2000 issue of Big Brother, taken after a brief hiatus from skating for Zoo York. It discusses Guess watches, Ryan Hickey, and Mike Hernandez, so it’s worth five minutes of your time. All of the photos are enlargeable, and a text-only version of the images is at the second half of the page so it is easier to read.

The saga, Sega, network and bodega

November 22nd, 2010 | 1:39 pm | Daily News | 2 Comments

Things for Monday that may be of some interest to you.

Christian Hosoi was recently at the House of Vans in Greenpoint for a commemorative skate jam held in light of the Autumn Bowl’s demise. Taji put together a “Taj Cam” clip of the evening, and Billy has a more candid iPhone clip involving pastrami sandwiches and car rides.

The scaffolding is gone at IBM Ledge. They also kept the planters away from the ledge, so there is a lot more space to hit it if you are heading backside for regular / frontside for goofy.

Speaking of skate spots, if you have been skating Midtown on a regular basis for over a year, you are probably aware that almost everything becomes an unforgiving bust in the period between a few weeks before Thanksgiving, all the way through the new year, due to the heightened security presence meant to give directions to tourists and kick you out. That basically means Ziegfeld is a total bust right now, with a special guard posted up there for all previously skate-friendly hours. Consider yourself lucky if you got more than ten minutes there these past two weeks. This night was fun though.

Quiksilver Canada trip clip by Pryce Holmes. Filmed on Super 8 and the very same Sony Handycam that was fortunate enough to be used for this website’s greatest contribution to the cinema. Features Torey Goodall, Alex Olson, and Pat O’Rourke. You can catch the first clip from the trip here.

Reasons you should watch this John Wisdom for Ready Amongst the Willing clip: 1. He skates to what’s probably the best song off Liquid Swords, which is saying a lot. 2. He skates in camo pants. 3. The skateboarding is really, really good.

Here is a re-edit of Luis Tolentino’s footage from the past year or so that has surfaced in various commercials, web clips, etc. Edited by Eli Gesner. Probably the closest thing to a full part from Luis in recent memory. Luis is one of New York’s finest athletes, and more than just high ollies. He has always ripped, and here’s his section from Flipmode 4 as a reminder. The trick at Pyramid Ledges may very well supersede many of the other, ledge-related endeavors accomplished there. How one does an ollie going down an incline over something very high, and nestled between two narrow brick pillars boggles the mind to this very day.

Belief Skateshop is holding a contest at the new Astoria skatepark on this coming Sunday (the 28th.) Flyer here.

Anyone still seeing these messages?

November 19th, 2010 | 9:31 am | Daily News | 3 Comments

Yesterday, there was a security malfunction that lasted about twelve hours, so if you are still seeing messages that say visiting the site might harm your computer, please leave a comment below, or e-mail info [at] quartersnacks [dot] com. Your computer isn’t going to crash, catch a virus, or explode from visiting the site, and realistically, it was something that was taken care of in a hour and Google just overreacted by blacklisting the website for the remainder of the day.

So please notify us if you’re still seeing similar messages. Make sure you empty your cache and refresh just to double check, sometimes those things linger around longer than they should. Just tested everything on Firefox and Safari, and it should be working it fine.

Updates resume tomorrow (Saturday Sunday.) If you missed yesterday’s post on all the magical things that have been happening between the tall buildings of this city because you thought your computer would explode by logging on, please click here to read it.

Quote of the Day:You know who I’m excited to see at the Garden this year? Syracuse. Fuck the Knicks.” — Miles Marquez. (Considering we have the same / a worse record than the Nets right now, who are fresh off what was called the worst season in NBA history, there’s nothing wrong with giving up all hope three weeks into the season. It’d be cool if that team’s entire administration got stuck on a raft in the middle of the ocean somewhere.)
