Given that most mainstream media outlets tend to make skateboarders look like complete retards when they’re on TV (Dill, Bam, Sheckler, etc.), it is always nice when they don’t fall victim to the otherwise inevitable propensity for fucking up anything skate-related. I say this with wholehearted acknowledgement that skateboarders dominantly are retards, with a select few exceptions, so making them come off as seemingly coherent and competent of existence in modern society at large is a feat in and of itself.

I haven’t seen HBO’s latest show, “How to Make It in America,” largely due to the fact that, like 70% New Jersey-ians, the one cable-having resource I had canceled HBO the morning after the series finale of The Sopranos aired. However, according to what I have been told, it hasn’t really dealt as explicitly with skateboarding as people had expected when they heard Javier Nunez had been casted for it. That’s probably a good thing, as seeing Kid Cudi doing kickturns at the Banks with a film crew would be an unfortunate image to see.

The promotional video for it is great though, and almost the sort of thing that you wouldn’t expect from a network tailored to reaching a fairly wide audience, as I’m not exactly sure how well it would resonate with a audience that doesn’t know who Sean Sheffy is. The whole thing is an account of Javier’s character, who is otherwise seldom seen in the series, but supposedly a very large background player. It’s not hard to figure out what cast of characters is responsible for informing the cocktail of seemingly fictionalized accounts of “Wilfredo” by everyone from Gino to Reda to Luis Tolentino to Koston. There’s a handful of actual tricks in it too, which I’m not mad at. It’s the best thing on TV since Jersey Shore.

Watch it over at HBO.com, The Legend of Wilfredo Gomez.

  • Any venal city can be bought out by definition. That’s all I meant by the city lost its soul.

    Dublin, Paris, London, they’re all like that. Rich people do what they please.

    And I said I’m not hating. Green Diamond dude knows he’s a rich boy and can’t live without knowing that. He’ll always be a little uneasy on the streets cause he stinks of privilege. My hating isn’t necessary, it must be hard enough for him to be incapable of knowing what it means to work for what you own.

    Sure he works for his creativity. But he’s never had to struggle. And when push comes to shove, the real kids will be standing easy, and he’ll be shook.

    That’s the point here, that you get Rich Mahogany from a dude with more money than he knows what to do with…why wasn’t it better.

    It’s much more inspiring for me to watch Real Life, the Sub Zero video or Underachievers, low budget, low fi, raw skating, not video effects and a terrible soundtrack. (Gee, that sounded like hating didn’t it.)

    Don’t act like homie deserves some award, and stop proving me right all the time; I would make my own video if I had a trust fund and didn’t need to work to pay my rent.

  • Being a delegate of the county of Westchester, I must say I think that I have an interesting perspective on these matters. In order to enter New York city, with the exception of helicopter transport, Connecticut residents must pass through my beautiful area. Although vehicles with the light blue CT plates do not have the best drivers operating them, their motor-vehicle skills surpass those of their Tri-State counter parts from New Jerusalem (thats New Jersey for all you CTers trying to get hip to the hip hop vernacular).

    Connecticut Natives are notorious for their boughy and entitled behavior. Opening businesses just to run them at a loss for tax write offs is only one example of their pompous behavior. Besides the stuck up pampered attitude, due to the earth’s tilt and indirect sunlight, connecticuters have a quite atrocious sense of style and dress. They have been known to quickly attach to themselves to any fashion fad, and may i add, inappropriately.

    You may also spot a connecticuter from their awkward and inaccurate use of slang.

    Connecticut does have some economical diversity or I should say disparity. There are shore homes, golfclubs, and mansions similar to that of ex new yorker 50 cent. The other side of the coin are bridgeport convicts which never come into contact with the aforementioned (except maybe with their electric fences). Aside from smelling funny, Connecticuters do have real problems. One is the overly-common over dose of anti depressants of CT moms. Not having a vision of their own life or desires because their family owns everything (including in-house Guatemalans) and their childhood dream of being a garbage man has been shot down by their kin, is another huge problem for CT youth.

    Even though many CTers may be the result of classist inbreeding, they really just want to be normal or even cool if at all possible. New Yorkers know that their is no normal. New York is the closest scene for them to latch onto. So we should be flattered that they try things like urban skateboarding, graffiti, and freestlye battling. Some great Connecticut sk8boarders were above their neighbors on an intellectual level and went straight to cali like the great Roman painter El Greco. So I feel we should just congratulate our CT neighbors living here in New York and their “special” skate videos. And we should congratulate their underaged nominated “NY” skate heroes they are all so “special”.

  • Hey now, don’t start comparing Quartersnacks to Green Diamond: they’re incommensurate, like apples and oranges.

    One is a NYC skateboarding site by, for, and about NYC skaters. The other is well, not Quartersnacks.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In a possible world where Quartersnacks and the Green Diamond were not incommensurate, I could only say that quality always trumps quantity.
    For fucking purposes, which would you rather have, in a hypothetical situation, 4 chubby white NYU girls or 1 fly guatemalan girl from the projects?
    (I suppose that’s debatable. See another example below.)
    Would you rather do 50 front 50-50s on the flatbar at Tompkins, or 1 backside down the big banks rail?
    I’d take the fly Ecuadorian girl and the backside 50-50 down the big rail any day…I hope you’d agree.
Not trying to pick sides because I don’t care too much, but what is it that you kids believe you’re bringing to the table anyway? I mean, you’ve got the sickest city to skate in on earth yet your whole newer generation grows up skating in parks, which guarantees permanent wackness.
  • This is getting ridiculous, and I always enjoy absurdity.
    Fuck 12th and Gay. And a term like “average NY skater” just doesn’t have much import, if it has any meaning at all.
    To ‘skateboarder’, I appreciate your disdain for solid writing; some people, myself included get paid to write, so are kind of adept at it. I apologize if being able to write clearly with a vocabulary above a second grade reading level with correct spelling somehow suggests that I’m a fat kid sitting at home eating twinkies.
    I’m actually freelancing in Midtown and can hold my own on a skateboard.
    As far as dudes from NYC who are worth watching skate, that’s really not what I was talking about in the first place, but I think you’re wrong. There’s tons of ill skaters in NYC. Just not at 12 and gay.
    The idea, I thought, when I was replying to someone who initially knocked CT and GD, was just that it’s a crying shame that people who are just starting to skate now in the city have lost sight of what makes NYC skateboarding so awesome and often revere or dickride richboys from out of town. That’s OK I guess, if only said out of towners were sure not to up themselves too much, which I haven’t seen. I’ve only seen a shameless annexation of “cool” that is rather baffling to see stand for as long as it has. Dudes have all these Max Fish photos and shit, really just mimicking O’Dell’s model (who yes, is from Ohio), but like the one dude was saying it’s not like they’ve contributed much except an influx of more out of towners who feel all too cool when they end up in a photo at the Fish on the GD blog or one associated with it (of which there are an ever increasing number).
    (I’d probably be all over these blogs if I hadn’t been 86′d from the Fish for being cockblocked by some douchebag bum cat who knew the bouncers better than I did, and who I subsequently told I would drink his blood.)
    There was a different time, around 2000, and then the 1990s before I relocated to New York, when skating here was raw and gritty, and I respect that shit, and I don’t go around like I run the place and never will. Seems like QS is trying to keep that respect alive, and that’s sick. GD portrays a pizza party suburban lifestyle in NYC, like the movie “Can’t Hardly Wait” meets “The Never Ending Story”.
    Finally–this one’s for you skateboarder and Seabreeze–NYC has always been influenced by outsiders/out-of-towners, like when the Gonz skated through or when the Powell team game to film for Future Primitive. Those dudes all helped build up the scene in NYC, and for better or for worse so is the GD, albeit not always with such savory characters as the Gonz or Van Wastell. So again, kudos to GD, fuck this post, shut up and skate.
  • Just wrote an awesome response to all this bullshit and it didn’t go through. It was too long I guess. But here’s how it ended:
    “Finally–and this one’s for you skateboarder and Seabreeze–NYC has always been influenced by outsiders/out-of-towners. Like when the Gonz skated through or when the Bones Brigade came here to film for Future Primitive. Events like these built the NYC skate scene, and to some degree the existence of GD is playing some part too (notably since Malfa has a Slap blog and he’s putting shit from them out), albeit not regularly with characters as big as the Gonz, but most often with CT whiteys, Aussies, and other skate travelers who need a place to crash. So kudos to GD, fuck this post, shut up and skate.”
    (There was all this other cool shit in there like drinking blood etc, but I can’t recreate it authentically, nor do I really give a fuck.)
  • you mentioned you’re a writer. writing’s a great medium for communication; you can revise, edit, re-read, and so on. hell, some great changes and achievements have been made through the good ol’ pen and paper. you’ve brought up a great discussion with some valid points. but the “pizza party lifestyle” isn’t going to end with some anonymous postings on the quartersnacks comment board, so you might as well save it and return to your cushy midtown office. pizza party. ha.
  • Gentleman, we’re trying to sell apartments in The Green Diamond and when people search for it the first thing they see is some party photo blog masquerading as a skateboard site with a bunch of wanna be norcal barney dirty skater kids traveling the world on their parents dollar. How am I gonna get a bunch of yuppies to move into 170 Ave A (The Green Diamond) when they already see it inhabited in this way. You kids should get a real estate license like me and make some real money instead of complaining about some spoiled kids who get their parents to buy them apartments. I see you guys skating over at 12th and A and it looks like you can’t even balance on a skateboard, you guys are no better than the longboarders cruising down 2nd ave to get to Whole Foods (these are the kind of people who look at apartments in The Green Diamond). Listening to you guys talk is worse than having to listen to some trust fund skater dude who is trying to decide on his next tattoo or to some chick talking to you about her dreams and aspirations.
  • Fuck that new york is wack now. What i get a big laugh out of is when people say “this city isn’t wack man, theres still a ton of dudes out there killin it” uhhhhhhh so then who the fuck are they? where is this mystical crew of dudes out there still consitently ripping. And for fucks sake dont say this site or the dobbin block dudes, or the flipmode kids, because one clip once every 2 years is not “killin it” I hate the transplants just as much as the next native, in fact I think green diamond is probably the thing that makes me want to skate the least, but I’m over saying this city isn’t dead. full of little kids with baker boards skating mccarren park or les or that park in queens. fucking wack. new york is fucking waaaackk.
  • Connectikook,
    Funny thing is I think I know exactly who you’re talking about when you said “highschool shitheads from CT”, and I used to be down with them. We met up a bunch of times actually, and they have footage in my video. When they met Yaje and the green diamond, they COMPLETELY stopped skating with me, save one day like a year and a half ago.
  • Saw Forkin prancing down Ave A yesterday man purse over his shoulder, Land’s End-looking, little moccasins, and Clark Kent glasses. Dude looked like he was going to a baby shower in Martha’s Vineyard.
    Not a good look. And a prime example of what it means to be “down with the Diamond”.
