A pivotal moment for modern culture

In folklore theory, a ‘legend’ is a short traditional oral narrative about a person, place, or object that really exists, existed, or is believed to have existed; even when it recounts a supernatural or highly unusual event, this is claimed to have occurred in real life. Unlike a fairytale or joke, it is presented (and generally accepted) as true; it offers information, moral judgements, or warnings which reflect the preoccupations of the hearers. In practice, the status of legends is more complex, both as regards orality and perceived truthfulness. Many which were once purely oral have repeatedly appeared in books, local newspapers, and TV, from where they feed back into oral tellings; some are commercially exploited (e.g. by tourist guides) but not believed; in some cases, the truth of the tradition is a matter for heated dispute (e.g. Robin Hood, Lady Godiva), while in others what was once regarded as true and important is now mere entertainment.

The nineties

The mastermind behind one of the finer New York videos of the decade Lurkers 2, and the revisionist cult-classic Gnar Gnar, dug deep into the cesspool of nineties New York degeneracy and released a video he had made in his wild teenage years. I am not exactly sure as to the precise year, but the Menace jeans allow any discerning eye to ballpark it. Features Charles Lamb in his pre-flip-in trick and feeble grind combo days, Sasha Lamb, and Newport legend and early-2000s New York-branded clothing entrepreneur, Sancho Cammayo. It’s a Staten Island affair the whole way. But way before P.S. 4 (or P.S. 6, whatever, you know the one I’m talking about).

Vimeo link here. Thirteen minutes and forty-five seconds long. *Link was taken down.

P.S. Rodrigo is like Mariano, but better. He just needs less indigenous generic underground hip-hop beats in his life.

P.P.S. Rowley had the part of the year, aside from maybe Busenitz.

He’ll know what you’re talking about.

New York, I hate you.

1. I think we all spent last Halloween in long sleeves. This winter is going to suck.

2. Quote of the Week:I fucking hate New York sometimes.” – Thando Beschta

3. New clip on deck. Filming deadlines all past. Christmas clip filming begins now.

4. Random footage re-edit of Black Dave, Joseph Delgado and others by Martin Wilson.

5. Autumn Bowl Jam footage by Jimmy Marketti.

6. Mountain Dew (really) clip featuring Eli and a bunch of Euros who insist on over-accentuating 5-0 pivot to switch crooked grinds on ledges as if it is somehow possible to make it overlook the fact that it will always and forever be one of the ugliest tricks known to man.

7. The official video for the aforementioned kinda-sorta summer 2009 anthem that won by technicality came out last week.

8. The realest video on the internet right now. This is the reason there is a “sometimes” implanted in Mr. Beschta’s quote in bullet point number two.

Knobs from Birmingham Jail

R.I.P. to the benches at Martin Luther King Jr. High School on Amsterdam Avenue and 65th Street.

Although the amount of things wrong with this spot always far exceeded its good aspects, it was genuinely one of the ledge spots in Manhattan that you had a less than 10% chance of getting kicked out of, so it’s a bit of a bummer that its been knobbed for good. It also has historical relevance in that it was the only place Danny Weiss managed to successfully film a frontside bigspin (on flat, in the middle of a line, mind you).

So some us will definitely miss coming here as a last resort spot. But you can always stop by if you want to skate a bad manual pad or a set of thirteen stairs.
